Dimension 9200 - Graphics Card Upgrade.
A colleogue wants to buy a high end graphics card as a christmas present for their son
What is the easiest was to ascertain what the PSU in the Dimension 9200 will support?.
Its not going to be much of a christmas present if the son fits it on christmas day and it doesn't work :/

The Dimension 9200 is the same machine as the XPS 410, and there's been a flurry of recent enquiries on the forums about upgrading older graphics cards in these machines (not that you'll find them, given the pig's ear that Dell have just made of the forums).
To summarise, the 375W PSU will support just about any single GPU card you can buy - I can't see any need to change the PSU. The very highest end twin GPU cards (usually marked out by an X2 on the end of the model) would probably require a new PSU, but they are poor value for money, and I wouldn't expect these to be fitted to a machine like the 9200. Other users suggestion of an Nvidia 9800GT (or perhaps a Radeon 4870) seem appropriate and will work.
From the point of view of getting it to work on Christmas day, you will probably find that any new GPU will have two PCIe six pin connectors, and the D9200 only has one. Dell overcome this by fitting a splitter that converts the single PCIe to two PCIe connectors, so I'd say order one of these as well - some GPUs come with these as standard, but many do not.

Is the purpose for the graphics card to play today's games? The 9200 has a 375 watt power supply which is good enough for an Nvidia 9600GT or an Nivdia 9800GT (better). Here is a 9600GT. Here is a 9800GT. I am not sure what CPU they have. If they have the Core 2 Duo, they will get better performance out of these cards versus the P-4 or P-D. It really depends on the games and graphic settings used, but you could get around 5 - 15 more FPS on the 9800GT. Either of these cards will play today's games. Others have gone into the higher-end GTX cards on that power supply but I would not recommend it if they do not have at least the Core 2 Duo CPU. Also, if the monitor does not support higher resolutions, there is no reason to get a higher-end card.

Hi malik999, Your current PSU is 375w, see HERE. Your case being a tower you can put any standard ATX type PSU into that case to boost your power, see HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>. So adding an high end graphics card is no problem.

The GT's such as the 9600 or 9800 only require one PCI-E 6-Pin connector. It is the GTX cards that will require two.

I have put Radeon HD 5750 to Dell Dimension 9200 with 375 Watt PSU.
From time to time I have the problem with colored stripes or gray/blue screen just after logging in to Windows (7, 64-bit).
For the rest - it works fine! I can run any game that utilizes 100% of GPU, and 375 Watt PSU is enough...

Hey there
i got a Dell Dimension 9200 and i was wandering about getting the HD 7950 Sapphire but i am just concerned about if it will physically fit, it seems to have a kind of double decker thing going on unlike my current Nvidia 9600
did you have to move anything around to get it to fit in? i mean i cant really tell, looking at my computer it seems like it will fit in the dell dimension 9200 case but i just wanted to double check.

:emotion-7: Did i say 7950...i meant to say HD 5750, the one mentioned in the top of the post. the HD 5750 looks big and i am not too sure how it would fit in the Dell Dimension 9200 case

Oh, OK :) I've put Sapphire 5750 to my Dimension 9200 without any problems. It occupies space of two cards, but I don't have any other PCI cards in my computer. SO, no problems there. Fit's nicely...

Aaah okay, apart from my current graphic card there is a device which takes up one, but the DD2900 has 3 slots so im guessing the 5750 should be aright

Forgive me if this is such a stupid question but it baffles my mind that a PSU that theorectically only outputs 375W can suppport new cards that require 400W. I owe a 9200 as well and are very happy with it, but the harddrive and the graphics card have begun to suffer in the hands of the newer games.
What I want to know is given what you say is true (which I hope deeply it is) I could buy a XFX HD467XZDF2 Radeon HD 4670

or a Visiontek 900203 Radeon HD 3850

which are both 400W PSU recommended and it will work in with my 375W PSU? I havent replaced any other parts that might consume more power if that is any concern.

Please try http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp. Put all the data about your computer, and check how much power it consumes with a new card. Important: because PSU in Dimension 9200 is not new, change also Capacitor Aging property. Good lack!

Not too sure about the OS problems, but as long as you can open the case and push the little clip things in the case (there's one holding the PCI-e card in place securely which is quite tricky), changing the card out shouldn't be a problem - mine came with a 8600GTS, and I have a 9500GT in there right now, so those card should work with the standard PSU.
