Dimension C521 not shutting down sometimes

Thank you for looking at this post.

My Dimension C521 (with Vista Home Basic) does not shut down somtimes. It starts to shut down and then goes not further than the screen showing "shutting down". The C521 is not shutting down for sure sometimes as when it is shut down in the evening, it is still shutting down the next morning.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thank you for looking at this post.

Hi,

I will recommend you to run the diagnostics on your system to check the hardware functionality:

  • Restart your system and keep tapping 'F12' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight 'Boot to utility partition' using the arrow keys and press enter.
  • Highlight 'Express Test' and press enter.

Please let me know if you get any error code.

If the diagnostics pass, try the system's performance in 'Safe Mode with Networking':

  • Restart your system and keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' using the arrow keys and press enter.
  • Once the system boots into 'Safe mode with Networking’ try to shut down the system.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your reply.

On F12, the C521 unit reports "Utility Partition not found".

When restarting again with the Drivers and Utilities CD in the drive, the C521 reports the same "Utility Partition not found".

Hi,

You can run the diagnostics on your system from Dell's online diagnostics:

On 'Choose a Diagnostics Type', select 'Full' and click on 'Run Diagnostics'.

Also, please check the system's performance in 'Safe Mode with Networking'.

Keep me posted with the results. Please reply for any further questions

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your reply.

The diagnostics reports that "did not identify any hardware faults" and 0 items need attention.

Hi,

I appreciate your efforts. Since the hardware diagnostics passed on your system, try the system's performance in 'Safe Mode with Networking':

  • Restart your system and keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' using the arrow keys and press enter.
  • Once the system boots into 'Safe mode with Networking’ try to shut down the system and let me know the result.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your most recent message.

There has now been some time to follow the instructions.

The result of tapping F8, going to "Safe Mode with Networking", and then shutting down is that the system shuts down quickly.

(The system has not shut down today earlier after normal shutting down. It was still on the shutting down screen after approximately six hours.)

Hi,

Since the system is working fine in 'Safe Mode with Networking' ans the diagnostics pass, it appears to be a software issue. I will recommend you to create a new user account and check the issue:

  • Click on 'Start' and type 'User account' in search menu.
  • Click on 'User Accounts' in the search list.
  • Click on 'Manage User Accounts'.
  • Click on 'Manage another account'.
  • Click on 'Create a new account'.
  • Type in the name and select 'Administrator'.
  • Click on 'Create account'.
  • Log off and log in into the new user account.
  • Check if the system is able to shut down without any issues.

Keep me updated. Please reply in case you have any further questions.

Dear Sir,

Thank your for your further reply.

Windows 8 has now been installed on the C521. The C521 is now shutting down.

Thank you for all of your consideration to this matter. If there is any further shut down issue, a further message will be posted on this thread.

Once again, thank you for all your consideration to this matter.

Yours faithfully.
