Need help adding new monitor

My dad sent my daughter an optiplexG110 to play games on. I told him not to send big monitor cause I would get and lcd for her. (not much room) I plugged in the new monitor and a message comes up ....Windows has successfully initialized this display adapter  then.....To use this adapter as part of your windows desktop, open the display option in the control panel and adjust the settings on the settings tab.  Am I out of luck because I don't have the original monitor to configure the computer with or is there some sort of trick?  Please help, she is begging me to get on the computer.  Thank you for any feedback
