No sound from speakers

Hi everyone !

I have had my Dell Inspiron 530S (running on Vista Home Premium) since 2008 and everything has been fine with the Dell Realtek HD A225 speakers which came supplied until today.

The kids were on the PC the other day and now when I log in there is no sound though the speakers.

They are plugged in as always (USB socket and "green plug") and there is power to the speakers.

The Control panel states that they are the default speakers and they are connected and working.

The Driver details states installed 24/01/2008 and driver is 6.0.1.5555 (on searching for updated drivers states they are up to date).

I am a bit of a techophobe and cannot understand what has happened.

I try to play something in Youtube and the mixer indicator on the speaker icon does goes up and down as if sound is playing on the PC but I can hear nothing. Even without speakers shouldn't I be able to hear something.

I really do not know what to do, Have the speakers broken and if I buy new ones will they work ? or is something else the matter with my PC.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I don't what to do to get sound back !!!

Thanks !

It's hard to say what your kids did or didn't do.

The first thing, is to plug a headphone into the front headphone jack and see if you get sound.  If you do, plug the headset into the rear GREEN speaker jack (where you should have the speakers plugged in) and see if you get sound.  If you do get sound, the problem is with the speakers.

However, if you do not get sound, either at the speaker jack and/or the front panel headphone jack, it may be a status corruption in Windows with the sound.  The first thing to do is go to the Control Panel and verify that you are still using the Dell RealTek sound driver.  If a non-Dell driver is used (or if the kids updated it with a non-Dell driver) we find that either it will not work or will not work correctly.  If a non-Dell driver is installed (e.g. if the generic Windows driver is installed it will be listed as HD Audio Codec) the first thing to do is install the Dell RealTek driver which you can get from the Dell downloads  HERE

If the correct driver is installed and the Device Manager shows RealTek for the sound device, RIGHT click on the device to highlight it and then LEFT click"Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers).  Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound.  This fixes Windows corruptions and many other issues and hopefully will fix your problem.

Thanks Fireberd for your suggestion.

I can confirm that is is definitely the right driver (ie) Realtek, I attempted the uninstall and reinstall as you suggested and it did update the driver as you correctly predicted.

My ipod headphones were plugged in to the front of the PC and yes THERE WAS SOUND (Woo hoo !!). However when I plugged them into the green port NO SOUND (Boo Hoo !!). I assume therefore my speakers are kapput.

However the only concern I have, is when I plug my ipod headphones back in the front jack again there was no sound there either.

Is this meant to happen ?, surely the headphone jack should produce sound everytime irrespective if the green jack plug did not.

Is there something more sinister wrong before I go out and buy new speakers or is this meant to happen ????

Any suggestions on a pair of good (cheapish)  speakers which will be compatible with my PC ! which won't cause my any grief !

Your assistance in this matter is very much appreciated !

Paul

As you did not get sound at the rear GREEN port, it says there is a problem in the PC, and NOT your speakers.

Is there any other sound device listed in the Device Manager? or is the RealTek the only one (it should be the only one).  If should be shown as "working OK", if not there will be an error code displayed.

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel.  The "Speakers" should be set as the defauly playback device.  Click on the icon for the speakers then click the Configure button.  Check that you have the correct speaker type selected and then test the speakers to see if they work here.  If they work OK at this point, there is some other Windows or media player application that is causing the conflicts and the problems.
