What is the Maximum Memroy for an Inspiron 580?

I am confused concerning the maximum  memory for the Inspiron 580.

On the Dell web site, it states 8 GB is the maximum.

When I run the Dell Support Center software, click the Detailed System Information Tab, under SYSTEM MEMORY, it states Maximum Supported Memory is 16.00 GB.

What is the correct answer?

Gray J, Yes I did.  As I posted above.  Its been running 16GB for about 4 months now.

According to control-panel ... system it shows an i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 GHz with 16GB installed, 15.8GB usable.  64-bit OS.  NOTE: the RAM is non-EEC

And yes its a Dell Inspiron 580 (per name-plate).  In case it got lost above, I wrote on 12/29/2015 (so you have the price, PN, and source):

I just powered up with 16 GB in my Dell Inspiron 580.  It has 4 RAM slots now holding 4x of these at $21/each (from ebay):

    • 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600 MHz 4G DESKTOP MEMORY 240 PIN Non-ECC RAM CL 11

I was careful to cross-ref what would fit and how fast it was.  These are faster than they need to be but they were also the lowest cost.  The old ones were DDR3-1333.  So these are faster (doubt that helps the machine go any faster), DDR3-1600 (aka PC3-12800).

I've had this i5 PC for about 5 years now.  I had been thinking it was getting old/obsolete, but when shopping its not bad.  So $80 brings me from 6GB to 16GB.

The Dell Support Center installed on my pc says I have 4GB of RAM installed with a maximum of 16GB of RAM supported.  I contacted tech support through online chat to verify this information is correct before I go ordering more RAM. I have a  Studio Slim 540s 64bit pc with Vista Home Premium. The first tech says maximum possible installed RAM is 4GB, then he tries to sell me some RAM.  I tell him he's a retard, but in a nicer way :) Why would a core2 quad only allow 4GB total RAM? He disconnects our chat. I get another tech support agent and she tells me 8GB is maximum. I ask her " Then why is my Dell Support Center telling me 16GB is maximum?" I offer to send her a screen shot. She says your out of warranty call a # for more help...grrrr Of course I would have to pay to get a simple answer that they should be able to provide me with. None of the manuals I looked at on Dells support website actually stated the amount of memory I could install. I decided to do a search which led me here :)  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/aa366778.aspx This article concludes that my Dell Support Center is correct and Dell technicians are incompetent.  Thank YOU Microsoft

Depends on 32 or 64 bit OS

Dell Inspiron 580 Memory

I suspect that 4 gig DDR3 dimms are prohibatively expensive.

4GB 240pin DDR3 DIMM 512Mx64 non ECC  unbuffered 1.5 volts PC3-8500 DDR3-1066

spec 1066Mhz with SPD CAS 7 latency CL7 max 1.25 inches tall

Maximum Memory 16GB ???
Memory Slots 4 (4 banks of 1)
non-removable base memory 0MB
Machine name: Dell Inspiron 580
CPU options:
- Intel Core i3 Processor
- Intel Core i5 Processor
Chipset: Intel H57 Chipset
HD Bus: SATA 2.5"
Front Side Bus options:
Memory Speed options: PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 204pin SDRAM SODIMM
Special notes:-
- Modules must be ordered and installed in pairs for Dual Channel mode.
- This machine supports maximum memory upto 16GB ??(using 64-bit Operating System) or 4GB (using 32-bit Operating System).
- Maximum configurations require a 64-bit operating system.

16 Gigs is for the MINI Tower not the USFF or Desktop.

Guaranteed-compatible upgrades for your Dell OptiPlex 580 Mini-Tower

Recommended Upgrade

part image

Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 16GB
Slots: 4
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800 with a maximum of 8GB Kit (4GBx2) per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the 'working' memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

No.  I did not install 16GB.

Everything I checked said 8 GB was max, so I never bought 16GB to try.

Really sorry for the late reply. The spec of the above memory is the same as the memory I fitted,so this should be ok! (DDR3-1333 PC3 10600 CL9-9-9-24 1.5V ) However,I used memory of a different brand ie G.SKILL (www.gskill.com) .Memory expansion over 4GB only useful for 64 bit operating systems.

3.0 My Memory
3.0.1 Total Memory 16 GB
3.0.2 Available Memory 12.9 GB

Hello,

Sorry for digging up this old thread.

Can installing 16Gb of Crucial or Samsung RAM pose a risk to the computer?

I know that the official maximum is 8Gb but if I can get 12.9 GB of available memory like the poster above well I would be really interested, because my Illustrator is crashing when I open a few windows (I have 6Gb installed)...

So could someone tell me if there is a risk?

Thank you

S

No risk, the worse that can happen is the computer will not boot, or you will receive error messages.

Oh well that's pretty bad

I'd freak out if that happened...

Would 12.9 GB make a big difference compared to 8 GB?

I mean is it worth taking the chance?

Thanks

I'd hazard a guess that the crash is not due to lack of mem, because the disk is used as a swap file for memory requirements which are over the actual ram.

Following this thought, you could check to see if the disk being used for the Illustrator swap file has enough room on it for a large swap file (for Illustrator and for the other software, including the OS).

By the way, although I might have overlooked the information in the emails, are you actually running a 64bit OS on a computer which can support a 64bit OS?

Yes, 12gb would make a difference, when compared to 8gb.

A question, how do you get 12.9gb of RAM?
