What is the Maximum Memroy for an Inspiron 580?
I am confused concerning the maximum memory for the Inspiron 580.
On the Dell web site, it states 8 GB is the maximum.
When I run the Dell Support Center software, click the Detailed System Information Tab, under SYSTEM MEMORY, it states Maximum Supported Memory is 16.00 GB.
What is the correct answer?

Gray J, Yes I did. As I posted above. Its been running 16GB for about 4 months now.
According to control-panel ... system it shows an i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 GHz with 16GB installed, 15.8GB usable. 64-bit OS. NOTE: the RAM is non-EEC
And yes its a Dell Inspiron 580 (per name-plate). In case it got lost above, I wrote on 12/29/2015 (so you have the price, PN, and source):
I just powered up with 16 GB in my Dell Inspiron 580. It has 4 RAM slots now holding 4x of these at $21/each (from ebay):
I was careful to cross-ref what would fit and how fast it was. These are faster than they need to be but they were also the lowest cost. The old ones were DDR3-1333. So these are faster (doubt that helps the machine go any faster), DDR3-1600 (aka PC3-12800).
I've had this i5 PC for about 5 years now. I had been thinking it was getting old/obsolete, but when shopping its not bad. So $80 brings me from 6GB to 16GB.

Depends on 32 or 64 bit OS

16 Gigs is for the MINI Tower not the USFF or Desktop.

No. I did not install 16GB.
Everything I checked said 8 GB was max, so I never bought 16GB to try.

Have installed 16gb (4 x 4GB DDR3-1333 PC3-10600 CL-9-9-9-24)in a Inspiron 580 tower and everything is working ok.

Really sorry for the late reply. The spec of the above memory is the same as the memory I fitted,so this should be ok! (DDR3-1333 PC3 10600 CL9-9-9-24 1.5V ) However,I used memory of a different brand ie G.SKILL (www.gskill.com) .Memory expansion over 4GB only useful for 64 bit operating systems.

Hello,
Sorry for digging up this old thread.
Can installing 16Gb of Crucial or Samsung RAM pose a risk to the computer?
I know that the official maximum is 8Gb but if I can get 12.9 GB of available memory like the poster above well I would be really interested, because my Illustrator is crashing when I open a few windows (I have 6Gb installed)...
So could someone tell me if there is a risk?

I'd freak out if that happened...
Would 12.9 GB make a big difference compared to 8 GB?

I'd hazard a guess that the crash is not due to lack of mem, because the disk is used as a swap file for memory requirements which are over the actual ram.
Following this thought, you could check to see if the disk being used for the Illustrator swap file has enough room on it for a large swap file (for Illustrator and for the other software, including the OS).
By the way, although I might have overlooked the information in the emails, are you actually running a 64bit OS on a computer which can support a 64bit OS?
