Will AMD Radeon HD 7850 works with XPS 8300?

Hello guys,

I want to know if the HD 7850 works with my XPS 8300. The HD 7850 is a PCIE gen 3.0 card, will it work with a PCIE gen 2.0 motherboard? I have to ask this because i see some topics saids that the GTX 680 won't work on XPS 8300. Also, will 460 watts power supply enough for this video card? I seen many articles saids that Dell tends to underrate their power supply. Does it mean that a 460 watts is like a 500 watts?

Is your XPS 8300 running okay?  If so, forget the bios update and just install the card.  It seems that a lot of people have had issues with this system.  Manufacturers will always recommend the latest bios when installing things like new memory, a CPU or video cards.  A general rule is not to update the bios if your system is working properly and you have had no problems.   Make sure you fully understand how to install the video card and its drivers before you begin and if you currently have a video card in the PCIe X16 slot that you uninstall the driver and software first before removal.

AMD has a Certified power supply List on their website.  The 460W dell is not listed.

The HD 7850 should work fine on the 8300.  Most do not have PCIe 3.0 boards so it would not make much sense for the card not to be backwards compatible with 2.0 which it is.  Your 460 watt unit should be more than enough for these power efficient cards.  The Dell PSU will probably peak over 500 watts, but capable of running at 460 watts continuously without any problems.  However, you will not come close to this.  Less than 300 watts will be your maximum.  The HD 7850 only uses 10 watts at idle and you probably could not get it to use much over 90 watts at max.  I am not sure what the issue is with the GTX 680.  I thought is was said that the 7000 series AMD cards did work in the 8300, but the GTX 680 just did not for undetermined reasons.

NVIDIA Specifically says its a VBIOS issue.

"We have a workaround in place. This workaround will be in VBIOS version 80.04.25.00.00 and later. We are now

working on pushing this to our board partners so they can provide this VBIOS to their customers as needed."

You should have the latest bios version for best compatibility with add-on components.  The HD 7850 is a PCI Express X16 card and will fit in your PCI Express X16 slot on your motherboard.

I checked the latest bios on Dell's website, the bios update, A06, saids that on the fix and enhancements, it saids, 1. Update VBIOS from 2098 to 2119. 2. Enable C6 as default. and 3. Update Intel MRC code to rev 1.2.2. Does it really have to do with compatibility with add-on components?
