XPS 400 cpu fan runs at high speed all the time

When I start my XPS 400 the cpu fan starts running at high speed immediately and continues at high speed all the time. The power supply and card cage fans are operating normally. The cpu fan was replaced because of this problem and continues to run at high speed. The old and the new fans have a 5 pin plug with 4 wires. (red, white, black and blue) This computer is 2 years 4 months old. It has been blown out frequently. This has never happened when the room temperature is hot during the summer months. The room temp. is 68-70 degrees F.

could also be that the thermal bond between the processor and the heat sink has started to fail. may want to pick up some Artic silver thermal paste and cleaner and reapply the heat sink.

go to www.support.dell.com go to the drivers page and download the bios file.  double click on the icon you downloaded.  click yes.  it will restart you computer automatically and upgrade the bios for you and restart.  it is very easy.

Thanks for your help. I updated the bios but the fan still runs on high speed. I might add the fan starts running on high the moment I push the start button.

I forgot to mention, if you can live with it, the fan on high is a good thing in some ways, since it will keep things cooler, however I am sure it is louder than is desirable.

It is very noisy!!! Compared to the low speed it sounds like i am sitting next to a running vacuum cleaner.

agreed those 120 mm fans can really get loud.
