I'd go as big as possible too. However I have a Dell 22" without a single problem for two years. I got a great deal as well by getting it from the Dell Outlet Store.

I strongly recommend a Samsung T220 or Samsung HD (with TV-tuner and HDMI, Full HD 1080p). Both are in 22 inches. I personally have a Samsung T220 and are really satisfied with it.
Specifications for T220:
Screen Size: 22" wide
Resolution Resolution: 1680 x 1050 (WSXGA+)
Brightness Brightness: 300 cd/m²
Contrast Ratio: DC 20,000:1 (1000:1) (Typ.)
Response time: 2 ms (GTG)
