Hi geminiliow,

Thank you for sharing the information. I have analyzed the information and it points towards a probable Video card or processor issue. The video card is ruled out as the system works fine with alternate processor. Also, after disabling multi cores, the system works with Q9300 as well. The issue seems to be with Q9300. You stated that you have already tried re-installing OS and it didn't help. I would suggest you to try Q9300 in an alternate system (if available) and see if the issue reoccurs.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to contact the processor manufacturer for replacement (if under warranty).

Regarding, why the processor might go bad? There may be a number of reasons like overheating of CPU, mishandling etc. Also, just like other electronic components the processor have failure chances as well.

Please reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

Hi geminiliow,

Dell has tested Optiplex 780 system with the following quad core processors :

Q8200 Q8300 Q8400 Q9505 Q9550 Q9400 Q9650

Note : Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as per your discretion in case you really wish to go ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

The bluescreen error message may indicate an issue with the hardware or video drivers. You may follow the steps below to  verify the hardware functionality :

  • Power on the computer
  • Press F12 button when you see Dell logo on the screen
  • Highlight the Diagnostics option and press Enter
  • Note down error messages if any and reply with the outcome

As you have upgraded the processor, I would also suggest you to check if the heatsink is connected firmly to processor and if the processor fan is running. If not, please reseat the processor and reconnect the processor fan as the error might be related to overheating of processor. You may refer to Service Manual Here.

Note : Please follow the safety instructions in manual before replacing parts in system.

You may also try to run the computer in Safe Mode and see if the issue persists. For starting the computer in Safe Mode, you may refer to article Here.

Please reply with the findings. Will take it further from there.

Hi geminiliow,

Disabling multi core in BIOS was a wise move. Glad that the system looks stable now ; thank you for confirming. Since, the system started crashing after processor upgrade, it points at a possible issue related to processor. I still recommend you to monitor the system for a few days and check if the issue reoccurs. In your previous reply, you have mentioned about attempting a format. Could you provide more details about what exactly happened? Did you try re-installing Windows OS using re-installation DVD's?

If the Q9300 is at fault, I would just send it back for a refund if possible.  The reason is that the Q9300 is hardly any better at all than the Q6600 and not an upgrade path you should follow.  The only reason to get the Q9300 is if your Q6600 had failed. The Q9400 is the lowest you would want to go for an upgrade and only if you could find a good deal for one on ebay.  I overclocked my Q6600 and it benchmarks the same as a Q9550, but I realize you can't do this on your Dell system.  The point is that you would never notice a difference between the Q6600 and the Q9300 with day to day tasks or even gaming for that matter.
