Erik Eckel is the author of this article and a practicing IT consultant.  For many achieving a certification is viewed as earning another college diploma.  It can open doors to opportunities.  Others see certification as a stepping stone to a specific job or increased compensation.

Erik sees the value as "part of the process to ensure (an individual) is proficient with fundamental technologies".

The Proven Professional program by design is role based (9 different roles) so we in program management take a similar view.  We think of certification as a representation of "readiness" to perform the role.  It is the reason why we commit significant resource to update our credentials frequently to keep up with the n the changing technology landscape.
