EQL branded 02R3X FW EN03 Drive is not supported on PS6110XV FW V7.0.2 (R383542)

We have

PS6110XV FW V7.0.2 (R383542) with 23xST3600057SS (DP/N 002R3X) FW EE06 + 1xHUS156060VLS600 FW A760 they work fine in the same array.

Recently we have ordered a new EQL Branded spare Drive 1xST3600057SS FW EE06 on the sticker label (DP/N 02R3X) but it is recognized as EN03 (see photo).

When we replace one old drive with a new one,  we see the status-spare, and the health-healtyt but get warning message.

What can be the reason?

Is FW EN03 compatible with PS6110XV FW V7.0.2 (R383542)?

Which one is newer EE06 or EN03, are the comptible mixed together in the same array. ?

Is it possible to be FW EE06 on the sticker but FW EN03 in fact.

In the attached photo the labels of two drives are exactly similar, even the manufacture dates are closer. The left one from previous order is labeled and recognized as EE06 and works fine, the right one is labeled as EE06 but  recognized as EN03 and gives a warning.

Many thanks

Hello,

Where did you get the drives?   The firmware is NOT the problem.  Drives for EQL are modified during manufacture.  The part number can be the same.

This modifcation allows the firmware to verify if it's an EQL drive, instead of an OEM or generic "Dell" drive.  From a server or desktop for example.

There is no way to change that to make it function.

You need to return the drive and get proper replacements.

  Regards,

Don

They are ordered trough Dell official service supply chain, providing a service tag and requiring a compatible drive. They arrived in closed antistatic bags with EQL caddy trays. The vendor insists on compatibility with EQL.

Hello,

Well you can't get new EQL drives from Dell for arrays not under Dell support contract.   All parts are for contract customers only.

You will need to work with your vendor.  There is nothing on the array side to support this.

 Regards,

Don

Sorry, but not only the part numbers are the same, but also the firmwares are the same and eql firmwares. I have had  non EQL drives previously with the same P/N-their firmwares are different from eql firmwares, ex. FW ES68. Also the drives was in assembly with EQL caddy trays. Non eql drives are not equiped with eql caddy trays. And at third as you can see in screenshot the first row drive is EN03 firmware and we don't get unsupported warning for this drive. Don't you think there is another reason...

Thank you

Hello,

The trays are not EQL trays, those same trays are used in other SANs like the Compellent and MD/ME arrays.

Since the drives are the same MFR / model it's not an EQL firmware. There is an MFR process that allows the firmware to identify that drive as EQL compatible. Not the firmware itself.  The drive firmware can be updated later, the code comes directly from the MFR not modified by Dell.

Hello,

There is one other possibility.  If the drives that are not working, are 4K byte sector drives you must have EQL Firmware v9.1.9 or greater to support 4K drives.
