Thanks for your reply.

On our existing SAN we had 'previous versions' configured, and used a seperate LUN to store the copies (away from the protected volume, as reccomended above a certain I/O level).  However throughout the tender process and even down to the storage design we received from Dell (which contained the following "The volumes shall be protected by Windows VSS snapshots (to enable users to restore previous versions directly) taken at 07:00, 12:00 and 15:00 Monday through Saturday. These shall be integrated into Equallogic snapshots on the same schedule"), we were lead to believe that the EQL with ASM/ME would behave with Shadow Copies/previous versions as we expected. In fact that section I quoted from the design doc was an addition made in response to a request for clarification where I specifically outlined our understanding and what we wanted to do! The design revision did not say that we COULD NOT do what we wanted, and the revision was made to the design as above.

Pretty angry to be honest, but hey. Worse things happen.

Thanks for your response anyhow, you confirmed what I suspected after an afternoon of playing.
