Template for VMs
Hello together,
whats the best way to make a template of a Virtual Machine with an Equallogic 4100? (I use a Hyper-V Cluster)
I thought its easy to create a Volume and install the first virtual Windows Machine on it. When i was ready i disconnected the volume from CSV, Disk Space and iSCSI and converted the Volume to a Template Volume in the Group Manager.
Ok, then ive done a thin clone of the template volume und connect it to the Hyper-V Host.
For the first VM it works fine.
But if i create a second thin clone the Windows Disk Managment say that the Volume is reserved, so i cant put the Volume to the Disk Space and CSV. I think the Problem is the Volume name, that is the same. And i dont know a possibility to change the Volume name without format the volume.
I rode the Document "Dell EqualLogic PS Series Template Volumes and Thin Clones: How and When to Use Them" but i dont want to create a drive letter for the volume for each VM.
How do you do a VM Template?
Greets

Found a solution for me.
With "diskpart" you can change the disk signature.
Just create i thin clone -> change everytime the signature of new disk clone -> then you can add more thin clones to windows :)

I would suggest to build a VM, install the OS, run updates, leave the IP on DHCP, don't set a hostname yet. Now you copy the VHD file to somewhere else (e.g. a share). This VHD is now your template; you create a new VM, but don't give it a harddrive. Now you copy the template VHD to the folder and rename the file to something that matches the VM name. Then you add an existing disk to the VM and point it to the VHD.
VMM may have ways to do this nicer, but I definitely wouldn't use a volume as a template; use the hyper-v options to do templates for VMs.

Ok thats the old way i have ever done. Thought i could do this with Equallogic easy. What a bummer :D
But thanks for Answer. Ive spend much time to test it with volumes without success -.-
But for what situation i can User a Template Volume? I don´t understand :(
