asmcli create smart-copy on linux (RHEL6.3) fails

I am just getting started with the HIT KIT for linux, and would like to try creating some snapshots.  The HIT KIT install went fine, ehcmcli shows the sessions open to the volume, I can mount the volume and see the contents just fine.  The problem I'm having is creating the snapshot.   Here's what I try:

----------

[root@localhost mnt]# asmcli create smart-copy --source /mnt/testvol
Dell EqualLogic Auto-Snapshot Manager CLI Version 1.1.0 Build 241078
Copyright (c) 2010-2012 Dell Inc.

Internal Error: Cannot get vendor and model for device dm-7 (2) : No such file or directory
Error: Mount point /mnt/testvol uses unknown device dm-7.
Error: The set of mount points is not a valid configuration.

-----------

I mounted the volume by issuing "mount /dev/eql/testvol /mnt/testvol" as referenced by the users guide.  I can cd into /mnt/testvol and access the volume contents, so I'm not sure what the issue is here.

Thanks,

Bryan

Sorry but this is a known issue with HIT/LE and RedHat 6.3.  You will not be able to use ASM until a new version of HIT/LE is released.

Until then, you are recommended to stay within the range of OS versions that are supported for their installed HIT kit version, and not upgrade to RHEL 6.3

As a workaround, you can consider downgrading their ‘device-mapper’ and related packages to the versions supplied in RHEL-6.2, which are compatible with HIT Kit for Linux, as follows. (Note: This workaround has not been extensively tested)

1. Obtain the following versions of the following packages from the RHEL-6.2 distribution media, or Redhat’s FTP site, for the appropriate server architecture:
- Version 1.02.66-6.el6 (or earlier) of the following packages: device-mapper, device-mapper-event, device-mapper-event-libs, and device-mapper-libs
- Version 2.02.87-6.el6 (or earlier) of the following packages: lvm2-libs and lvm2

2. Use the RPM utilitiy to downgrade these packages, as follows. (Note: This example assumes a 64-bit architecture. For a 32-bit server, the package names will include ‘i686’ instead of ‘x86-64’):
rpm -U --oldpackage device-mapper-1.02.66-6.el6.x86_64.rpm device-mapper-event-1.02.66-6.el6.x86_64.rpm device-mapper-event-libs-1.02.66-6.el6.x86_64.rpm device-mapper-libs-1.02.66-6.el6.x86_64.rpm lvm2-libs-2.02.87-6.el6.x86_64.rpm lvm2-2.02.87-6.el6.x86_64.rpm

3. After this downgrade, users who are using LVM (logical volume manager) should double-check that their /etc/lvm/lvm.conf file is correct, and that no other adverse reactions result from the downgrade.

4. OS update facilities such as ‘yum’ will upgrade these packages again to an incompatible version, and as such should be avoided.

There is a Bata release for the HIT for Linux (v1.2.0) that address this issue.  If you would like to become a Bata Tester, please sign up for the Bata program on the Support Site (then go to: Service> Dell EqualLogic Bata Program).  Once signed up, and approved, you can then download the Bata version.

Note that the next release of HIT for Linux should incorporate this fix however the date and exact fixes are still pending and are subject to change.

Thanks,

-Youssef
