Why is the EMCTA-SI2 so hard?
Is that really necessary? I mean, I don't think I've ever studied so hard and felt so overwhelmed by a (cert) test in my life. I'm SO glad it's over

Our certification exams are intended to ensure that Proven Professionals are the best in the market. Our exams can be difficult; difficult enough to ensure that your certification is valuable and marketable.
In fact, Foote Partners recently released research on the highest paid IT skills and certifications. EMC Proven TA-Expert, rated among the highest paid IT Certifications, increased 10% in value whereas EMC-TA Specialist increased 28.6% in value. Three storage- related certifications made the Top 10 list - Brocade, EMC, and SNIA.

I'm actually participating in a test writing workshop this week, so maybe I can shed a little light on this.
When we prepare to write an exam, we think alot about the person taking the exam. The job roles are discussed, and we get input from EMC folks in the field as to how the products being tested are used "in the real world".
If we are updating a test, we also look at metrics on the answers given to every question in a previous test. If everyone misses a question, we know the question really *is* too hard, or maybe it is poorly written. If everyone gets a question correct, we know the question is too easy, or maybe the distractors give the answer away.
We try to make the test so people can pass it if they really know the answers. That is what makes a cert valuable right? It should be proof that you know what you are doing.
And let me tell you, coming up with questions and distractors that make sense - but that are not obvious - is very, very hard. The discussions around the distractors get very geeky though, so that part is fun (even though it does bring on headaches when you are in the middle of it).

I did pass it. It was just a LOT of information and I am very proud that I pulled it off. I've been in the storage sector for 10 years now as an admin, as an EMC IS, as a Brocade consultant, and now as a pre-sales engineer and storage architect so this test is very relevant to what I do - however, I did expect it to come a little easier given my background and experience. I was quite humbled. I learned a lot and I have already been able to exercise some of the knowledge I gained from studying for the exam.
