1-Dimm or 2- Dimm

Can someone explain to why a 1-Dimm would be more expensive than a 2-dimm when your building your system?
Doesn't 1-Dimm mean only 1- memory slot & 2-Dimm meaning 2 memory slots?

I just purchased a Certified / Refurbished - Inspiron from the Dell Outlet Store and it has 256 MB 1 Dimm. Is that better than a 256 MB 2 Dimm? Because, I want to upgrade the system to 1000 MB.
Can somene clear this up for me?

Thanks,

With one DIMM you have a single chip with all your memory on it. 2 DIMM has the same amount split between two chips. You have two slots total either way. By having 1 DIMM you are left with an empty slot for future upgrades. It's more expensive because one chip with more capacity is more expensive than two chips with less memory. If you have the one DIMM setup then when you upgrade you don't have to throw out half of what you already have to add the bigger chip.

Thanks bigboy: thats what I figured.
I was afraid the 1Dimm meant only on slot.
I got it now.

Big-Time Thanks for the reply.

watch out for specific models which do have only one slot and some have built-in memory. always watch for the "1 extra slot accessible to user".

you were right Riversandlakes,

I opened up the memory door and much to my surprise there was only one (empty) slot available.
Where would the other slot be?
The users manual talks about upper & lower memory stating that the "upper memory is inder the keyboard.
I don't know if I want to attempt taking the screen off the hinges and removing the keyboard. That seems a little radical to me.
Any advise??
