9-cell batteries can have a long life span when on battery power only. Depending on your systems configuration, you can have it last up to five (5) hours. But, this is by using the minimum configuration on your portable system. Disable speed-step, disable the NIC, don't use the DVD or CD RW drives. The lighter the work load, the longer it will last.    Do a search for 'Battery Life Expectancy' in support.dell.com to get a list of things you can do to your computer to get the most out of your battery.
