I'm trying to give an this old laptop a new lease of life. I either want to try and update the Vista install or upgrade to Windows 7.

Trying to run Window Update the update window just gets stuck 'Checking for updates'.  I tried renaming the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder to start afresh, but this didn't work either - it just got stuck checking for updates.

Any ideas, please...

Thanks

Hi BJAMESS,

Please update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1Sf4Ql1

I would advise clean install of Windows 7 if you have the OEM disc.

Once done, install the drivers in the right order - see this link - http://dell.to/1pRZGow

If you do not have the OEM discs, then you could order online - http://dell.to/12vcZ27
