DELL XPS L501X continously reboot following memory upgrade

Hello,

I just upgraded my DELL XPS L501X from 4GB to 8GB with compatible Kingston memory.

The computer now reboots continuously without opening Windows 7.

With F2 I can see that the 8GB memory has been accounted.

Using F8 and trying to repair does not help, I always end up with continuous reboot.

Many thanks for your help !!

Hi Abcon,

I purchased this kit:

uk.crucial.com/.../CT2294917

It has also come down in price since then.

Hi all, Here is my reference which works as well: G.SKILL SO-DIMM DDR3-1333 PC3-10666 4096MB Pack 2x4MB F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ Cheers.

Does the problem disappear if you install the original RAM?  If so, the new RAM is either faulty or incompatible with the system.  Is it KTD (Dell-spec Kingston RAM) or low-quality KVR ("value" RAM)?

It is KTD. If I reinstall the original RAM the system goes into repair mode (looks better), however I have not gone through the whole process so I do not know yet if windows would finally open.

Many thanks again.

Let the system complete its repair to see if it'll boot.  If it will, run an extended diagnostic on the hard drive to rule out it being the cause of the problem.

Once the system is running, try one of the new modules by itself in a single socket - if you can get it to boot, try the other socket.  Then try the other module the same way - you may be able to find a faulty module (or faulty memory socket) this way.

Hi again and happy new year ! Windows recovers with the original 2+2 GB RAM. When I install any new 4GB RAM module in any single socket I get directly a blue screen with a long message including "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer... IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" or "BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant". Note that I checked that I have the latest BIOS version for the XPS 15 L501X (A08).

Have your reseller exchange the memory for two new modules - or see if they'll exchange for a different brand.  If those do the same, the mainboard is likely bad.

The same thing happened to me - I bought an 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB PC3-10600R 1333MHZ) from XtremeRam on eBay and tried installing last night but I had severe reboot / BSOD problems. When I put the original 3GB (2GB + 1GB) back in I was able to boot as normal.

Running the latest BIOS (A08).

I have sent them back to the seller and have opted for the PC3-12800 kit from Crucial so hopefully have a bit more luck with those.

The 4GB DIMMS from Crucial work perfectly - I got a refund from the original seller but it was worth it in the end to spend an extra £20, I will use Crucial again.

Hi,

I also returned the Kingston RAMs. The vendor sent me equivalent Gskill RAMs, and it works perfectly.

I realise that even specialised vendors do not know what is the compatibilitybof stuff they sell.

I hope you will be successful.

hi,

I'm having the same problem as you with Kingston KTD types. What is the exactly type of GSkill RAMM you're using with succes?

Thank you, now my PC is up running at 8GB. Forget all about KINGSTON eventhough they write it is compatible.
