Dell Inspiron 9100 won't boot

Hello everyone!

I'm having problems with my Dell Inspiron 9100, and would appreciate any help.  This happened a few months back, and I've been so frusterated that I just threw the computer in the corner and have only tried a few times to turn it on since.  I was working in win xp pro one day, then all of a sudden my computer froze, then turned off.  i thought it was weird, so I hit the power button, but the 3 lights (scroll, num, cap lock) all went solid for a few seconds, there was no fan activity or anything just the lights, then the lights went off and the computer did nothing.  If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks!

Make sure the computer is on AC and the battery is out of the system. Then hold FN and hit the power button and let them both go at the same time. This should start a quick diag. Watch the num/scroll/caps lock lights. If it doesn't do anything, switch to just battery and try. Whatever lights turn on, start flashing, or dont turn on can be used by tech support to diagnose your issue.

i did what you said - and only the caps lock stayed lit, then no fan, and the light went off.  any idea to what that means?

Means theres a problem with your memory. Try reseating them and testing them in eachothers slots and trying only one at a time. This will determine if its the memory or the slots on the mb. Call Dell tech support with results and if your under warranty, they'll fix it right up. If not, they can transfer you to spare parts to get some parts shipped out. Good luck!

I have the same problem.
Last time is used the laptop it was shut down correctly after i was finished using it, today it wouldn't boot.
Same symptoms. But when i press fn+power i get the LED on the right. Scroll indicator?

If so, what does that indicate?

This laptop is nearing it's two-year warranty so if it's a mobo error i'm set for a free fix.
I've had nothing but problems with this laptop. :/

Old thread but valuable information.

Anyone know what the scroll lock means on the same model? It is what I have and am running through the same problem.

I've had the same problem recently too. Everything you mentioned match my problem the same to a T. I'[ve even quadruple checked everything to make sure everything is bolted down and plugged in to their proper locations. One question. Was it the motherboard causing this issue or was it the cpu? I'd like to know so i can just go ahead and puchase a new motherboard or new cpu. Everythign else I tested and ruled out as the problem accept for the motherboard, cpu, possibly but highly doubt it's the ram or hard drive. Thankyou for any advice and I'd like to hear what your answer is to the problem yours had and if you were able to get it fixed or replaced. Dell hardware and components should not be so sensative that this issue happens too often to too many people. I've done my research on the internet over multiple websites and alot of people are having very similar issues. I think dell should replace parts like this even if it runs out of warranty, because things like this should not ever happen.

I have the same problem! However, I am also not tech savvy enough to fix it myself, unless you know of any DIY videos.

Never mind. I figured out the issue. I hope this will help anyone else who may have run into the same problem as I. If anyone in the past or present has taken a look at the processor underneath the cooling system, good chances are that the processor got yanked out of the motherboard and stuck to the cooling system. That isn't supposed to happen if it ever happened to you. There's a flat head scew dial next to the processor that is supposed to keep the processor fastened into the motherboard. If your processor got stuck to the bottom of the cooling system, you'll need to carefully and gently pry it off the cooling system, gently clean off the old dynex thermal greese,  apply a new thin layer, then carefully place the processor back into it's slot correctly, then reseat and fasten it onto the motherboard by turning the flathead screw dial until it's locked into place, then reassemble everything and it should all work fine as long as everything else is plugged in correctly and nothing was damaged in the process. Good luck!

I think dell does provide step by step videos for your own device after inputing your service tag on the website. they for sure have owners manuals and step by step instructions on how to diassemble your computer with all the warnings and procedures you'll need to take etc. you'll just need to do some careful thorough reading before you proceed and do not skip steps or reading, just to insure you don't mess up any vital steps. I'm glad I took time to read and follow some steps, otherwise I'd be out $50.00 to have a tech do the job. you just got to make sure everything's plugged in and set in correctly to see if that may be the issue. If everything's plugged in, then you'll have to break it down by unpluggin one thing at a time and testing to see if the computer will tur on or not. Just to try and rule out other thigns that could be causing the problem. Just make sure if you want to go head and try to figure it out for yourelf, make sure you take out the battery and unplug the ac adaptor power source from the computer and ground yourself to some metal while working on it so you don't accidentally short anything out. make sure you're in a dry area too, no drinks around. Good luck with that. maybe start by researching online to see where others may have similar issues, then go from there. You'll never truly know what the issue is until you have checked it out for yourself or pay someone else to check it out.
