Dell Inspiron n5010 keyboard issue

Hello This is Rohitashva

My keyboard isn't functioning properly, Tab, Caps key are not working.

Shift key is automatically working, above alphabets numerical keys are showing only special characters.

I have attached a external keyboard but still confronting the same issue.

Sometimes I restart laptop then it works better. (once in a blue moon)

Please help me to resolve this.

Hi Rohitashva ,

I am sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for checking the functionality on external keybaord.

I recommend you to preform one last step that is to check outside operating system. Check the keyboard functionality in Command prompt. For that restart the system and at Dell logo tap the F8 key every two seconds. In the ‘Advanced Boot Option’ window using down or up arrow key highlight ‘Repair your Computer’ and hit enter. Select the keyboard layout and click on ‘Next’. On the ‘System recovery Option’ menu click on ‘Command prompt’ to open it.

Use your keyboard in this window to check if it works fine.  Reply with the status to assist you further.

There is F12 available with option 'diagnostics', I clicked there it's scanning a assessment test for my PC, i didn't find any repair option there.

apart from above I tried with two external keyboards, I don't think so changing a laptop's keyboard will solve the issue.

Hi rohitashvaj,

Thank you for the update. I request you to follow the steps given below to run interactive (Custom) test on the keyboard.  To run diagnostics restart the system and at the Dell logo tap the F12 key every two seconds. This will start the One-time boot menu. Using arrow keys select ‘Diagnostics’ and hit enter. This will run diagnostics on the hardware components of the system which may take around 5 minutes.  Next Press N for no when it asks you to continue Memory test.

Next the option listed will be: ‘Test Memory’, ‘Test System’ and Exit. Please select ‘Test System’.  Then there will be option to run ‘Express test’, ‘Extended Test’, ‘Custom Test’ and ‘Symptom Tree’. Select Custom test and click on keyboard  and hit enter. Reply with the status of the test for further assistance.

Hi Sujatha

I have done it twice BUT after 5 min assessment completion I selected N for no when it asks you to continue Memory test.' message appears 'Pre-boot system assessment complete. Please select OK to reboot your system' once I did same, it got reboot.

I didn't find any option as you mentioned (Next the option listed will be: ‘Test Memory’, ‘Test System’ and Exit. Please select ‘Test System’.)

Looking forward hear you.

Hi rohitashvaj,

Since you are unable to run custom test on the keyboard, check the functionality with an external keyboard.  This will help us in isolating the issue.

Hi Sujatha

As I already mentioned in my initial message (since beginning this thread)

Hi Rohitashva Jain,

I am sorry for suggesting you to repeat the step of checking with an external keyboard.  Since even the external keyboard is not responding. I suspect it is the software issue. I suggest that you restore the system to the date when the keyboard was working fine.

Please find the link below for system restore for Windows 7:

Reply with the status.

Hi Sujatha

We detected the issue, Laptops keyboard is short that's the reason it's not allowing even a external one, so we need to change the new one.

Can you please suggest me how can I order a new keyboard for this model ? (If any online delivery service available from Dell itself ? )

Please reply asap.

Looking forward hear you.
