Dell Inspiron n5110 issue!

My laptop has an issues with it's charging. I'm not experienced with computers so I cannot fix it. My computer will not even turn on unless it's plugged in, then it will turn on and it says 0% available (plugged in not charging)  and then says consider replacing battery. The message consider replacing battery is new and I've had this issue awhile. I purchased a brand new battery which came charged. The computer worked unplugged until the battery died and then said the same problem as the previous battery. I now have both batteries, and an unslolved problem, does this sound familiar to any one ? Can I get some help?!

Check to make sure the system recognizes the AC adapter (F2 at powerup).  If it does not, the battery won't charge.

If the adapter is listed as unknown, the first thing to try is a new OEM adapter (NOT a third party unit).

If that does not fix the issue, replace the DC jack:

And if that doesn't get the adapter recognized, replace the mainboard.

Hi JamieHeaney,

     Before you start throwing money at a 4 year old laptop I would advise taking the following steps. 

  • Ensure that you are using a Dell PA-12 Family or PA-23 Family 90w AC/DC Adapter / Charger
  • Enter BIOS by tapping the F2 button during boot-up and LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS (this is so you see the info regarding your charger during bootup. you will be required to depress F1 to continue to Windows if the charger isn't recognized by the computer)
  • Power off the laptop. and with the adapter connected to your computer unplug the charger from the wall. (this allows the adapter to unload any residual charge to the laptop clearing and the light should go ALL THE WAY OUT Immediately)
  • Unplug the adapter/charger from you laptop, release and remove the battery.
  • Discharge flee power to the computer by depressing and holding the power button down for 30 seconds.
  • Plug the AC/DC adapter/charger back into the WALL
  • With the battery still uninstalled, plug the adapter into the laptop.
  • Boot up. Follow onscreen instructions if given.
  • Shut Down via start menu and unplug the adapter, reinstall the battery, plug the adapter back in, power on.

     Should these steps fail, inspect the cord and charge tip, they can become delicate as they age. If neccessary order a DELL PA-xx Family charger as described above. most "universals" will not properly function on Dell laptops so as ejn63 states get an OEM charger for your system.

     The good news here is that there's almost no chance of a charge problem with this model being mainboard-related. If you perform these steps and still have no charge activity, don't hesitate to contact and if this answer helped, please hit the YES button GOOD LUCK!
