Dell PC Diagnostic tool, need further information
Recently on my Inspiron 17R N7110 I've experienced severe overheating issues - SpeedFan detecting CPU temperatures averaging at 60C when not under much stress, to upwards of 80 while gaming.
Using the PC Diagnostic tool to perform stress tests, it returned a failure on the CPU stress, System Memory Advanced Pattern Test part. I followed that with a Memory stress test but that went flawlessly.
Can anyone elaborate for me what do these results actually mean, since I found no further information on the Diagnostics tool page.
Thanks in advance,
Nikolay

Hi blooddodo,
Sorry for delay in response, as I was on weekly off.
About the system temperature here are few things which you can try :
1. Check and make sure the airvents on the system are clear (if required use a can of compressed air),
2. Try using the system on a hard surface (may be a table) and check if there is a change in system temperature.
3. Observe which area of the system gets heated more than normal.

Hi Nikolay,
Welcome to the Community,
Did you get any error code/ message when you ran the stress tests?
I would suggest you to run the onboard hardware diagnostics (tap F12 on start up, select Diagnostics).
Post back error code/message if any.
Also access BIOS (tap F2 on start up), check and post back BIOS version.
Thank You

The Diagnostics tool didn't give me an error code, at least nothing that I identified as such. It simply said Failed.
The hardware diagnostics gave
Error Code 2000-0512, Validation 17049 (Processor Fan running faster than expected), with values
Current 5500RM, High 5615RPM and Low 4347RPM
During the tests, CPU temperature was between 74C (low) and 88C (high)
The BIOS version is A13

Hi blooddodo,
Your system is already using the updated BIOS version, however you may try to flash the BIOS with the same version A13 and then try running the diagnostics again.
Use this link to download and flash BIOS: lt.dell.com/.../lt.aspx
Note: While flashing BIOS AC adapter should be connected, battery should have more then 10% charge and all external peripherals should be disconnected from the system.

Flashed BIOS following your instructions, and the Fan speed returned to a lower RPM, with a 4326 and 3796RPM, High and Low, respectively, and no error popped up. The operating temperature is unchanged however.
Any suggestions about that?

If the temperature under heavy stress has gone down then you your system should be fine. Observe your system for couple of days and if you need assistance please feel free to post back.

Gave my laptop for cleaning, turned out to be quite full with dust. Temperature while idle is still the same, but there was a dramatic decrease in temperature when under heavy stress.
