Dell XPS l502x overheating
Hi!
I've had my laptop for a year now. The warranty just expired and I didn't renew it
However, a problem appeared recently: the laptop seems to overheat and it shuts down automatically when the temperature rises a lot. I installed SpeedFan to check it and see whether it is abnormally high. Sometimes it reaches about 80-90 degrees on the 4 cores and the hard disk. Slightly before it started shutting down, the fan became very loud and it switches on and off continuously. So I don't know where the problem started. I thought it is a software problem so I returned the system to a previous point, but this didn't solve the problem.

Hello Cxl_smiles,
As you have mentioned that your computer is overheating. There are few troubleshooting steps that I would suggest. Please follow the steps mentioned bellow.
1. Releasing flee Power.
Shut down the computer, disconnect the battery and ac adapter, press and hold the power button for 10 to 12 seconds and connect the battery and ac adapter and check.
2. Cleaning the Vents:
-- Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust thereby not allowing heat and air to pass through.
-- Turn off the System.
-- Unplug the AC Adapter.
-- Remove the Battery, for instructions on how to remove the battery see the Service Manual.
-- Use Compressed Air to blow the dust out of the vents.
3. Update the BIOS:
An out of date BIOS can cause heat issues by an outdated temperature table for the system.
Please click here to get the latest version of BIOS.
**NOTE: Few things to ensure before updating the Bios is, the Ac Adapter should be plugged in and the battery should have minimum of 15% charge. No other external peripherals should be connected to the computer. Please ensure that the Bios update should not be interrupted else it would damage the motherboard.
4. Run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action.
Please try the steps and write back with results, would be glad to assist you further.

Hallo!
Escuse me for not writing, but I have not done all of the tasks. I did only 1, 3 and 4. However, the problem was not solved. I mean that the fan does not switch on and off constantly, but yesterday it was almost the whole day on. Probably task 2 is the crucial one to completely stop the overheating. I think it is a bit better now.
The Pre-Boot System Assesment did not give any errors.
I still need some time to get the air spray and figure out how to open the laptop. There is one big panel at the back, but I don't know where exactly the fan is located.
Thank you very much for your help.
Regards,
Cxl_smiles

Hi!
I have another question. What is the easiest way to get to the cooling fan? I checked how to disassemble the laptop in order to see where the fan is located but it seems to be one of the final steps...

I am not sure that I would like to do it all by myself. Is there an easy way?
Thanks!

Hi Cxl_Smiles,
You can also refer the Service Manual for XPS L502x <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> to clean the air vents. In case you are not comfortable, you can take help from someone. I would also request you update the BIOS to the latest version. Restart the computer and check the functionality.
Please write back for further questions.

Hi!
Thank you for the manual. I ordered a compressed gas spray. I would like to have someone helping me so I will wait a while. I will write to you in a few weeks when it is done.
However, it got really better since I did your suggestions 1, 3, and 4. It does not overheat and the fan does not work constantly.
Thank you very much for your assistance!
Best regards,

Hi!
As I promised, I am writing to you. :)
My friend helped me clean the fan. We disassembled the laptop and cleaned it. It was quite dirty. :) The laptop is rather quiet now. I am not sure that I have made enough tests but it seems to be much better than before.
Thank you very much for your help!
Regards,
Cxl
