Dell inspiron 1564 i5 processor black screen - help please
Hi, I have just upgraded my inspiron 1564 with a new 256Gb SSD hard drive and upgraded to Windows 10. Everything worked fine until last night when the laptop just beeps three long beeps at me and shows nothing on the screen? It seems to be running as you can hear it. It has also alway run a little hot and this seems to still be the case. I will plug it into a monitor when i get home and see if it's just the screen. Anyone have any ideas?

Were you able to test that system on an external monitor? Normally 3 beeps is an indication of a problem with the chipset on the motherboard. Hopefully it is just the LCD screen and not the motherboard, as those screens tend to easier (and cheaper) to replace.
Let us know if the external monitor does show video. If not we'll provide some possible fixes for a chipset failure but in many cases that does require replacing the motherboard.

Hi Todd, I did test it on a monitor and still nothing I am afraid. The laptop has always run hot but over the last few days it seems to be extra hot? Could this be the source of the problem.? Is it going to be faster and cheaper to just replace the motherboard or will this just happen again due to the heat? It was working fine on Saturday all day and then just refused to come out of sleep mode. I turned it off and placed it upside down to try and cool it but on this occasion it didn't make any difference. It's frustrating as I can't see what's happening because the screen is black. Thanks for your help

Hi,
I don't know how much the cost is for a replacement motherboard so it's hard to answer your question. It really depends on the source of the heat.
Do you know if, when the system was running and running hot, whether the fans were working and blowing out hot air in an attempt to cool the system? You said you placed it upside down like that was something you had done previously.
Honestly though, compared to the price of a new motherboard, replacing the heat sink and/or fan isn't much more of a cost. It might even be included in the out of warranty repair costs.
You can contact Dell's Out of Warranty Support group and they can provide a no obligation quote for repairs. It looks like the standard price for sending the system into the repair depot for a major part replacement (such as motherboard) is $269 in the U.S. There would be some sort of limited warranty provided with the repair but they can give you more details on that.
