Dropped hard drive on the floor (disk usage 100%)

Question

I start from the beginning to get everything straight. Laptop: Dell inspiron 15R (7520).

I wanted to clean my fan from dust. So i had to take off almost any part to get my fan clean again. And after when i put my laptop together i accidentally dropped hard drive on the floor (about half meter).

After that everything seemed to work. Except that my windows didn't want to start up on the first time, so i made force shutdown. I also played Fifa about 1 hour with no problems.

But in the next day i got blue screen errors like "page fault in nonpaged area" and "kernel data inpage error." Sometimes the windows crashed on startup.

When i started some program, my computer gets slow. Even if i tried browsing with chrome. So i checked task manager, and disk usage was 100%?? Not every time, i also used Adobe after effect, with no problems, but quite often the disk usage was 100%.

So i made CHKDSK error checking and repaired all errors. Followed the cmd screen. Some of the problems was repaired online and for some i had to restart my laptop. I also made "chkdsk /r"

At least windows check said, that there is no errors anymore. But the problem itself still existed.

High usage processes was System itself, chrome, Service host: local system (17) and AVG resident shield service.

Also AVG had some problems to start correctly. I tried to disable AVG protection and after that disk usage seemed to normalize. But sometimes disk usage was 100% again...

I decided to make format C and i used dell backup and recovery software.

At the moment the disk usage is ok 0-5%, but i when i start my laptop, then about 2 minutes, the disk usage is 100%.. The last thing is not normal?

So, does my hard drive work properly and there is nothing to worry about, or something is messed up and i need to look for a new one?

Any suggestion, which program to use, to test hard drive sectors and repair them, if there is something wrong?

Hi bombaa,

I would suggest you to run the thorough test on the Hard drive in ePSA diagnostics. Please follow the steps mentioned below to run the complete test on the Hard drive.

Turn on or restart the computer.
Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the key once a second until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to Windows turn the computer off and try again).
At the One Time Boot menu, press the arrow key to highlight Diagnostics, PSA+ or Enter ePSA, then press to begin the hardware Diagnostics.
During the hardware diagnostics test press ‘Esc’ key.
Select the Hard drive and give a check on through test box in the right hand bottom corner.
Run the test.

Please let me know the findings.

Hi Ravi, Thank you for your answer. I runned the test and got following error: Error code 2000-01 42 Validation 87621 Msg: Hard Drive 0 - S/N WX61EC1LFH73, Long self test unsuccessful.

Now my disk usage was again 100% about 1 minute and then everything was ok again.

I see, that the Error code 2000-01 42 indicates that i need to replace it?

Also i can test to remove and re-install the Hard Drive?

I can use my laptop, but sometimes the disk usage goes to 100%. Otherwise everything seems to be working fine. How important it is, to replace it?

Sounds like the heads came down on the platter when the drive was dropped - yes, that drive will work as a replacement, and yes -- the Dell recovery flash drive will restore the system to the way it was when you removed it from the box.

That's not necessarily true - there are 7200 rpm drives that actually use less power than some 5400 rpm units.

If you can sacrifice some space, a 256G SSD is probably the way to go - it not only will generate less heat, but also be essentially shock-proof (you'd destroy the notebook long before you'd destroy an SSD in a fall).

Also 7200 RPM hard drive produces more heat than 5400. How big is the difference?

Yes, SSD is pretty good. I heard, that if you are going to buy one, then intel SSD is good choice. Reliable and better life time.

But i don't see, that i need one, so i better choose 7200RPM/16MB over 5400/8MB, if there is no big difference about heat.

Hi bombaa, Yes you can go for the 750GB hard disk for your system. SSD would be the best option but they are expensive.

Thank you for feedback, but now i have problem with the recovery usb.

I replaced old HDD with new one and while doing factory reset, i get error:

"Error 0x4001100200001005. If this issue persists, please contact Dell Support."

What should i do?

I found solution.

I went to bios and under boot i choosed UEFI boot. Then i changed the order. USB to first and HDD to second, but after that i got the error, that no free space to make factory reset. So i went to BIOS again and restored to default settings.
