Help! Inspiron N5110 will not launch windows or run in safe mode

My Inspiron N5110 was running fine this morning but when I  woke up the system tonight from sleep mode, it wouldn't start or launch Windows 7.

I got a black screen and the system went to Windows Error Recovery. It was unable to launch recovery successfully. It will not start in safe mode and it will not launch start up repair or return to last known good configuration. I updated Windows over the weekend and ran a virus scan within the last week. I added a new program for my Statistics class, Data Desk Demo yesterday. That program ran fine and the laptop was running this morning. I don't recall getting an error code. I'm a student, and I really need my laptop!  Help!

Hi afiehrer,

I am sorry to hear that Windows 7 fails to load and would not allow you to restore or recover it.

I suggest you to boot from the Windows 7 Installation disk and perform a System Restore. Please follow the steps provided below:

1. Insert the Windows 7 installation disk and retart the computer.
2. Start tapping F12 at the Dell logo for the “Advanced Boot Menu” options.
3. At the “Advanced Boot Menu” page, select CD/DVD drive as the boot device.
4. When prompted, “press any key”, and then follow the instructions that appear.
5. On the “Install Windows” page, choose your language and other preferences, and then click “Next.”
6. Now, click “Repair your computer.”
7. Select the Windows installation you want to repair, and then click “Next.”
8. On the “System Recovery Options” menu, click “Startup Repair” and follow the instructions.
9. If the Startup Repair fails, please follow the steps again and click “System Restore” and follow the instructions to restore the system to an earlier date.

Please reply to this message with the results.

Just ran diagnostics and got error code 2000-0142.

From what I've seen on the forum, this sounds like a hard drive failure?

The laptop is about 4 mos out of warranty,  of course.

Hi afiehrer,

Thank you for replying.  Error code 2000-0142 indicates that it is a hard drive failure. As you have said that the system is Out of Warranty, you need to purchase a new hard drive.
