How long should a laptop be expected to run on the battery?

I have an Inspiron 6000 laptop, running Windows XP Pro.  Normally I run it connected to AC, but today our power was out and I wanted to use it during that time.  The battery only lasted about an hour.  Is this about standard?

Somewhere between an hour or two is expected of a 6-cell battery under medium usage. If you dim your screen and use it lightly, you should get closer to two hours.

It depends!

The overall condition of the battery, the charger, the power settings on the laptop, the amount of charge on the battery.

Anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours on a 6 cell.

After reading your response, I checked my laptop battery, but could not tell which battery was in my Inspiron.  In looking at the portable batteres for Inspirons on the Dell website, it seems there are two, a 6-cell and a 9-cell.  I can't tell from either the documentation that came with my computer or from the battery which type it is.  In reading come of the comments from the product reviews, it sounds as if I should have taken my battery out when using the AC to make it last longer.  I've had the laptop about 1-1/2 years, but rarely use it on battery power.  Anyway, mine must be a 6-cell.

Thanks for responding.

Hey all,

I have a 2006 model Inspiron 6000 with its original 6 cell battery!  It is getting tired and have been planning to replace it.  What kind of run time can be expected for the 9 Cell Battery?  Also, has anyone run the 12 Cell Battery?  What kind of run time for the 12 Cell and is it worth the cost?  How about the size and wieght of the 12 Cell?  I have not seen anyone with, so currious about?

I do fly International about once a year and would like to use my Laptop to take DVD's to intertain me on those 12 hours flights to China?

Any and all thoughts would be appreciated!

Gary

A 9-cell battery should give you about 2-3 hours of run time.

No battery will last you for 12 hours, so plan on bringing a travel adapter (if the plane has EmPower). I don't think the TSA will let you bring more than one spare battery.
