I am unable to create a Windows Repair Disc (under Backup and Recovery in Control Panel)
This is a brand new XPS15z PC, just received and configured for the first time today.
I was able to create recovery disks.
I am not able to create a repair disc, it keeps throwing a windows error saying: "Microsoft Windows Repair Disc" has stopped working. (see image).
The event viewer says:
Faulting application name: recdisc.exe, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7990e
Faulting module name: ole32.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7c92c
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000001247b
Faulting process id: 0x%9
Faulting application start time: 0x%10
Faulting application path: %11
Faulting module path: %12
Report Id: %13
I've tried rebooting multiple times, even starting up in F8 safe mode with command prompt, and still gives the same issue.
I've never seen this fail for me before on other Win7 PCs.
What's going on? I could probably get a repair disc if I had the OS DVD to boot up in, but I don't, so I'm stuck with this.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Matt..,
I haven't seen this on a Dell, but I've seen similar problems creating the repair disk on other laptop brands. This is caused, according to Microsoft, by OEMs adding functionalities to Windows utilities. What you can try is to open a Command Prompt window and type recdisc.exe at the command prompt. Also, you can download an iso image of the Windows 7 Recovery (Repair) Disk here: www.windows7library.com/.../recdisc.iso
You can use your DVD burning software to create a bootable Windows 7 Recovery Disk from this iso image.
Hope this information helps.

Thanks Tony, the command prompt doesn't work (even after booting in safe mode); however, the "iso" link is brilliant, and I burned a dvd with it. As far as your explanation, I also read that somewhere while I was researching the issue, and your confirmation is enough for me. Thanks again.

Matt...,
You're welcome! There are other links for ISO images of Recovery Disks for Windows 7 32- and 64- bit and for Vista 32- and 64-bit, but those are torrent downloads. I prefer to go with the Microsoft link(s).

I am having the same issue. I downloaded the ISO you mentioned in your previous response. Do you know if it is 32-bit or 64-bit?
Thanks!

Tony,
That link is not a Microsoft link. It is part of the Windows7 Blog site (independent of Microsoft).

ole32.dll message re: recdisc.exe
May 2014, I bought a Dell Inspiron 17 w/ WIndows 7 OS, and it wouldn't let me make a system recovery disk. I kept getting the ole32.dll error (see below). I tried the above fix and it worked right away. Thanks for the posting it saved me a lot of headache!
