INSPIRON N5010 faulty screen

Dear all,

Before the screen of my Inspiron N5010 have become completely blanked out, it kept flashing with vertical and horizontal lines for few seconds.

I tried to reboot it, but didnt success. The switch botton was glowing, fan was working but it just didnt boot and showed nothing.

There was also nothing showed on the external monitor i have connected it to.

It probably needs a replacement of lcd screen, but i just cant be sure.

i dont know if i should replace the connecting cable first.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Lawrence

Thank you for the information.

It is the system board that is the first point of failure here; the second could be the LCD. Memory seems fine as no beeps codes while normally booting the system up.

In order to assist you further in this case we need the system service tag of your laptop. Please add me as a friend and personal message me the system service tag.

Glad to assist,

If you're getting nothing on an external screen or the internal one, remove the battery, unplug the system, remove and reinstall both memory modules and try again.  If you still get nothing, you likely have a mainboard problem - either instead of or in addition to the screen issue.

Hi  Lawrenceho,

Welcome to the community

It seems to be an issue with the video card as even the external monitor does not display anything on it. When you try to switch it on, do you get any beeps codes?

If in case you are getting 6 beeps that is definitely an issue with the Video card. You need to

replace Motherboard / video card (Video card only if system has discrete video card).

You can also try to run the diagnostics on the LCD. You can use this link to run the diagnostics:

http://dell.to/eV0zAQ

This link has a very good video tutorial for your reference. If you do not see anything on the screen that means the issue most likely with the video card as you are not able to view anything.

Please let me know your findings, glad to be of assistance.

ejn63,

Thanks so much for the prompt replies!

i did try to connect it to my TV via HDMI port but since it didnt boot at all, i wonder there was any chances it could output signal to TV. I have also tried with my friend's dell laptop, and found it output nothing to TV while booting, until it reached the windows user login page. Here is what i guess:

Power up >> system check if all parts work well >> Yes >> Booting >> Login page >> Output video signal to external mon.

                                                                           >> NO >> Frozen

If my guess is correct, i am now on case 2 and that faulty part(s) can be anything, RAM, SCREEN, MAINBOARD,etc.

Please correct me if my concept is wrong.

I have reseated every parts that could be reseated, eg ram modules, hard drive, cables, even the screen..

To

the link you kindly provided only brought me to the index page of dell.com.

Thanks again for all the replies and supports i have received.

Hi Lawrenceho,

Welcome to the community,

You are right, the issue could be with the LCD cable as well as the LCD screen. In this case I’ll suggest to try the cheaper option first (replace the LCD cable). This is the link to help you with replacing the LCD cable:

http://dell.to/MfRKle

You can order the LCD cable by calling the Dell spare parts sales at :1-800-972-3355.

Please revert if you need any further assistance. Glad to help you.

You are welcome,

Please try this link and see if you are able to open it:

support.dell.com/.../document

or

support.dell.com/.../lcd_bist

In case not, then here are the steps to run the diagnostics:

Turn off the Computer.

1. Hold Down the FN Key on the keyboard and press the power button, then Release both buttons.

2. This should start your PSA Diagnostics

3. You will see two color bar screens appear in succession, on the second color bar screen there is a message asking you if you saw the color bars. Press the N key for No to start the LCD BIST.

(If nothing is displayed then listen to the beep codes; and wait for some time for the LCD BIST to start automatically)

4. The LCD BIST will run several full colored screens in succession with a beeping sound.

5. Check for any lines, distortions, or abnormalities you were seeing in the Operating System here.

6. Once the Diagnostics are finished you will see an Error message appear, this is Normal. Press the N Key to end the Diagnostics or Press the Y Key to continue the PSA Diagnostics.

7. If no symptoms were displayed probably the video card else the LCD.

Note: LCD BIST, as the name suggests helps to identify the problems with the LCD screen only.

Let me know if this helps.

OK i have done the LCD BIST a moment ago. No colors bar, No line, totally nothing on screen but i got 4 successive beeps repeatedly.

Have we come up with a conclusion with this information?

(i dont want to annoy you by saying thank you over and over again. But i am sure you know how much i appreciate)
