Inspiron 15 5000 i7 Extremely Slow
Just purchased an Inspiron 15 5000 with 5th gen i7 processor, 8GB of RAM & running Windows 7 64 bit.
I loaded only one of our applications and I'm amazed at how incredibly slow this machine is. On a three year old i5 machine, the app opens in under 15 seconds. On this PC, it's just under 50 seconds.
If I close the app and start it again, it's open in less than 3 seconds.
Paint takes 10 seconds to load. IE11 takes so long that I think I didn't click the icon on the task bar.
I've disabled Intel Speedstep and didn't see any improvement.
No other applications are loaded, including no antivirus.
Any suggestions?

Hi m-***,
After you did a factory reset, did that resolve the issue or not? You have not specified the same.
If the issue is unresolved, then see the below:
Enter the service tag at - http://dell.to/1kGWIcI - download the service manual for the system.
Remove one RAM module and check the system with the other and vice-versa. See, if either of the RAM modules are causing the said issue.
Keep us updated.

Hi m-***,
Update the BIOS from support.dell.com - http://dell.to/1Pwntme - enter the service tag and select drivers and downloads and run the BIOS update.
Could you restart the system and tap on f12 key and choose diagnostics - let it run a complete test and also run a thorough test on the HDD and the extended test on the memory modules. This will help diagnose if any of the hardware is at fault.
Keep us updated.

Hi m-***,
Please accept my apologies. However, the link specified directs to the support site, you only had to change the service tag.
Could you try creating a new local admin account and check if the system works fine there. Also, check in safe mode as well. Find the links below for the same.

Rishi,
Added a 2nd admin account, logged off, restarted, and logged in with test account. Still takes forever to load the application. Tried in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking and this app won't operate.
While in standard mode, the application takes just over 50 seconds to start. If I exit and wait a minute, I can start the app in under 3 seconds. Is there some type of caching setting that's causing the huge delay when initially starting an app on this machine?

m-***,
Could you advise what is the specific application that you are referring to?
When you state - "the application takes just over 50 seconds to start. If I exit and wait a minute, I can start the app in under 3 seconds." - Is this the first time you launch the application since the time you start the system from a shutdown / restart? Or does this happen every time you start the application regardless of when the system was turned on - i.e. after using the app, you close it, still use the system for a while, decide to open the app again and it would take time to launch it?
Could you disable all startup items in task manager and check if the app works fine? If not, open "run" command - "msconfig" - then disable the non-MS services and check for the same.

The first time any application is launched, it takes almost a minute before anything happens (splash screen, etc.). If the application is closed and then opened within a minute's time (no reboot), it opens in less than 3 seconds.
Turning off all start up items has no effect. I did a restore to factory settings (disk erased and restore run from backup DVDs) and installed just one application. There's no antivirus, MS Office, Acrobat, etc. installed.

After it passed the thorough diagnostic on the memory, I would have never guessed to reseat the SO-DIMMs to fix this issue. Removing DIMM A resulted in the app starting in just under 15 seconds. Same result with DIMM B. Again, same result when both modules were in place. Looks like one or both weren't fully seated. Not sure why this wasn't caught in diagnostics.
Thanks for the help. Unfortunately for Dell, this answer came too late and I've already purchased, received, and started to distribute another brand of laptops to our employees.

Hi m-***,
Thank you for the update.
The diagnostics would not detect if the RAM modules are firmly seated or not. It would only detect if there is a hardware fault on the component. We are glad that the issue was isolated and fixed. However, it is rather unfortunate that the resolution took time.
At any point, if you need help, we shall certainly do our best possible!

Hi Rishi,
I have the same problem, normal running of pc and starting of programs is so slow. This is not what I expect of a 4-day old laptop from dell (Inspiron I5, 5000 series). And you suggest to fiddle with the RAM modules... if I opened up the laptop to do that, wouldn't that void the warranty?? I am not a techie... just a regular home user. Pls advise.
Thank you.

Hi amscgan,
A system slow issue could be caused due to various components either hardware or software.
I would advise you to first, restart the system - press f12 on start up and choose diagnostics. Run a complete basic test and extended / thorough tests on hard drive and memory modules. This will help diagnose any hardware issues.
Test this and report back as this is a 4-6 day old system right now. Also, as you say you would not want to open the machine up, we can certainly look at alternate solutions.
