Inspiron 1764 LCD not displaying anything
I have an Inspiron 1764 running Windows 7. Over the past 2 years there have been 4 episodes during which my LCD screen went blank for several days at a time. During each episode I must have tried rebooting more that 50 times. Occasionally the "starting up Windows" screen would display, but the screen would go black before the desktop would appear. During these episodes I repeated tried shutting down and rebooting. I also tried removing the battery, unplugging, and holding power button for 30 seconds. Eventually, for some reason, the screen would work again upon rebooting.
During this 4th episode I tried using external monitor. That worked, but the laptop LCD remains black (although not completely... it illuminates slightly at times, but never displays any images or text. I've run PSA and the comprehensive online diagnostic. Passed all test, Also updated bios to A13. Still no LCD display.
Any suggestions?

Could be, in descending order of probability, a loose cable between the display and mainboard, bad power supply for the backlight (inverter or converter depending on whether you have a CCFL or LED backlight, a bad backlight or a bad mainboard. Start with a check of the cable that runs between the display and mainboard. Then go from there in replacing parts.

the display cable connection didn't appear to be loose, but the wires leading to the connector are covered by tape or fabric... and there may be a loose wire underneath. In any case, laptop worked fine when reassembled. thanks for your suggestions.
