Inspiron 6000 won't turn on

Below is my first time ever post from late last night.  This morning 'Majestic' suggested I post it under Inspiron / General Hardware too... so here goes.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I've read a lot of posts about flickering lights without the PC turning on and the screen staying black. Those are my symptoms too.  Several folks suggested calling Dell.  That seems to be my only option or to take it to a third party (like the Best Buy Geek Squad for example). What I cannot find anywhere is how much is it going to cost me to call fee-based support at Dell?  Is it by the minute?  If so, that's scary!  Any recommendations?  Thanks.

hi, you don't really give much info but a first thing to try could be remove and replace the battery, see if it switches on. What lights are flickering? Are you trying to start with battery power only, or with the power adapter plugged in. Is the green light on the power adapter showing or is that the light that is flickering? As well as reseating battery try reseating memory, hard drive. What happens, is the situation the same? Has this only just started to happen, has anything else unusual happened recently.

These are all great questions and they led me, I believe, to a resolution. The lights that had been flickering were the power light and hard drive light. The one on the AC charger was solid green. The problem started last night for the first time; no prior problems or symptoms. I tried removing and replacing the battery which did not resolve the problem. However, today I tried removing the battery, plugging in the AC adaptor / charger, and turning on without the battery installed. It booted up normally with no error messages. Hallelujah! I then tried battery alone and then battery and AC both. All functioned normally. I don't know what caused my problem, but after I had done my initially posts to the forum last night, I remembered something. Three days ago I spilled a small amount of coffee on my laptop's case and some leaked through the zipper onto the laptop. I toweled it off but maybe some got inside and shorted out something. Maybe it dried out over time, or maybe the problem will reoccur. :-( Only time will tell. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for replying, and I'm really glad you got the laptop to work. It could well be the coffee leaked through to something vital, let's hope the problem doesn't reoccur.
