Inspiron 600m USB ports not working - Hardware problem

My laptop's USB ports are no longer working. I believe that some internal circuitry got fried after I plugged in a USB powered device that had its own power supply. I don't remember exactly what I did because it was while ago. I still like to use the laptop, but without USB its uses are quite limited.

When I plug in a device, nothing happens. It is neither powered nor recognized. All USB ports are affected.

If someone has an idea what might have caused this and how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi JonnyL2,

In order to avoid any software corruption, you may uninstall and re-install USB root hubs, update chipset drivers and system BIOS. You may uninstall and re-install USB Root Hubs by following the steps below:

  1. Expand ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’
  2. From the list, look for ‘USB Root Hub’
  3. Right click, choose ‘Uninstall’, choose ‘Ok’
  4. Uninstall all ‘USB Root Hub’ listed
  5. Wait for all the drivers to get uninstalled
  6. Restarted the computer
  7. Restarting the computer will install ‘USB Root Hub’s automatically on the computer

You may update the chipset and BIOS of your computer from the links below:

  1. Intel Mobile Chipset: http://dell.to/YTyxMc
  2. O2Micro O2711EC1 driver: http://dell.to/ZpSJ98
  3. BIOS: http://dell.to/Y1iEHl

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Steps to download:

  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is downloaded on the desktop, double click on it and follow the prompts on screen
  • Restart your computer.

If the issue persists, it might be an issue with motherboard of your computer and might need replacement.
