Inspiron 7520 won't recognise Kindle Fire HD

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 SE 7520 with Windows 8. However, when I connect my Kindle Fire HD via USB it will not recognise it. When I connect it to my wife's laptop it works fine (she uses Windows 7).

I have tried all the different USB ports and more than one USB cable but it will not show up in my computer on my laptop. In device manager, the Kindle appears under 'other devices' but has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it. When I go into properties it states that the driver is not installed. If I select update driver Windows cannot find it. I have tried restarting both Kindle and laptop.

I have contacted Amazon about it and they have basically said that the problem doesn't appear to be with the Kindle Fire HD but with my laptop and therefore it is likely to be something Dell related.

Anyone have any ideas how I can get the laptop to recognise it and install the drivers?

Hi pcornall,

Have you tested the USB 3.0/2.0 ports in your system using another type of USB storage device?

Please check and post the results.

Hi - thanks for the reply. Yes, I've tried with some USB memory sticks and connected my phone via USB cable and the laptop recognises all of these correctly and they show up in my computer. It is just the Kindle Fire HD it seems to have a problem with.

Hi - the Kindle Fire HD doesn't need any installation software. It normally installs automatically when connected to a computer in the same way a USB memory stick will automatically install drivers. It did this when I connected it to my wife's laptop, but not when I connected it to my laptop. It would appear there is something about the Dell laptop that is preventing this from happening, although the laptop does show the Kindle in the device manager, but will not install the driver.

Hi pcornall,

Some devices need drivers to be installed prior connecting them with the computer.

Check if you have received any Software installation discs with Kindle Fire HD and install the software in the computer and then connect Kindle Fire HD.

Please reply for further help.

Hi pcornall,

Please disconnect Kindle Fire HD from the system and install the Chipset drivers by following the onscreen instructions.

Restart the laptop and connect Kindle Fire HD to the laptop and check if it is detected.

Please post the results.
