Inspiron mini power adapter tip polarity

hi there folks. I've got an Inspiron mini 10v which I bought early 2010 in the UK.

It still works fine and is my main computer for work, but the power adapter has broken. I've bought a replacement which didn't work, and a lot of googling tells me this is probably because the tip polarity is wrong.

I need a centre-negative polarity. I've started asking suppliers on eBay and Amazon if they can tell me tip polarity of the replacement they are offering, but so far the only response has been a general "they all work for Inspiron mini 10, 12 etc etc" which doesn't seem to true.

Does anyone have any previous experience of this, suggestions for where to get the right replacement, ways round it. At the moment my  net book is out of power with no way to charge it, so any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

As long as you buy a genuine Dell AC adapter, it will be find.

Do not buy a 3rd party AC adapter.

I have bought at least a dozen Dell AC adapters on eBay. Just make sure the photo shows a genuine Dell.

Many thanks for your reply, it seems to be getting itself sorted out. I followed some instructions for clearing the CMOS (I think it was that) - basically take the battery out and and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, and it seems to be charging OK at the moment. I'm typing this on it so fingers crossed!

Very happy with the netbook otherwise - 3 years of daily work and still going.

Hi Andrew,

Honestly, it will not possible to get the tip polarity information for the AC Adapter. What best I can do is share the certified Dell Part Number of the AC Adapter that you may purchase online or buy through Dell Sales team in your region. Please share the exact system model as there are various model available under Dell Mini system series.

Also, you mentioned that the original AC Adapter is broken, by this do you mean its physically damaged or is not functioning at all?

Please reply with the information, I'll be happy to assist you.

Hi Saharsh, many thanks for your reply. I've had a look again at the polarity symbols, and I think it's my mistake - one reads left to right, the other right to left, but looking carefully they contain the same information. that doesn't explain why the replacement adapter doesn't work, but at least it might be an easier problem to resolve (and I learned about tip polarity!)

The model number I have is 1011-8936 Inspiron mini 10v and the battery model number is AD6512 but so far as I can tell from the Dell UK website, these are no longer for sale through Dell

Best
