There was a model of the E7470 that had a NVMe SSD as an option, so it must be compatible. I have the laptop and I remember that option clearly because it was then that I had to learn about the differences. I even got confirmation from a Dell tech confirming both drives will work.

mSATA -- I believe the only Dell systems with NVMe support are the XPS and Alienware models - and among those, only the very recent ones.

Thanks. I was confused by the reference to a PCIe SSD in the user manual, but it didn't say NVMe.

PCIe refers to the card connector -- these can be mSATA or they can be PCI Express/NVME.

Not necessarily. While the connector is the same, the drives are electrically different. The Latitudes support mSATA -- not NVME.

This cannot be right. All youtube reviews show long 2280 pcie ssd in latest models.
It has to be atleast sata3 pcie m.2 2280 drive compatible. Then maybe nvme too.

Nope. mSATA is different than M.2 SATA. Two different sockets.

Yes, the sockets are different - but you will often find M.2 (NGFF) SATA drives still being referred to as mSATA vs. PCIe.
It's a wild-west of form factors and drive types right now -- which is why confusion is inevitable.

For what it's worth, I did try to install Windows 7 on a E7470 with an NVMe SSD (Samsung 950 pro) and it sort of worked.
"Sort of" because the boot process is extremely slow so I am not really happy with that solution.
