NVIDIA GeForce 8400 M GS driver for vostro 1400

Recently when I search the NVIDIA GeForce 8400 M GS's driver & I found a newer version(174.31 xp WHQL, A07) for Windows XP.

The problem is vostro 1400 is not list in the Compatibility system page: Base of list, it only support inspiron 1420,1520,172 & the video driver listed in Dell Drivers and Downloads pages for vortro 1400 still remain the old version (156.83_xp WHQL, A06).

Is that any problem if I just install the newer driver(damage my video card/overheat)?

Why the newer driver did't support vostro 1400? Is that means different system can only using the given driver although both system using same video card?

One more question, is that true of newest video driver always best than the older driver?

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:

You won't damage your video card, or cause it to overheat, by trying the drivers.

Just be sure to have an up-to-date backup... or at the very least create a new System Restore point, before installing the new drivers :emotion-55:

Newer drivers always include updated/additional features to the previous release - including things like support for newer cards, and game 'fixes'.

I personally always like to keep my graphics drivers bang up-to-date.  But then I am a gamer :emotion-5:

What model system do you have, and what OS are you using (XP, Vista 32bit, Windows 7 64bit or whatever)

1. where can i find the latest update for Nvdia GeForce 8400

Download them directly off the Nvidia website.

2. what should i do and how should i do to take safety measure before installing the latest update

Creating a new System Restore point is the quickest/easiest way. :emotion-5:

NVidea has driver version 195.82 available for 8xxx series using Win XP:  http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winxp_195.62_whql.html

This driver was released on 12/4. Should be OK.

Many recent driver updates are mainly fixes for specific games which have been having problems with older drivers.

The Vista 64 driver is version 195.62: http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_x64_195.62_whql.html

Dell no longer will update drivers, as NVidea is now writing generic laptop drivers that work with most laptops. Look in the NVidea site for updates.
