Network/display drivers for Latitude C600

Question

Hi,

I have recently bought a 2nd hand laptop - a Dell Latitude 600C (PP01L), and have reinstalled Windows 2000 on it. I am trying to get hold of the following drivers but havent found anything that works on the dell drivers download site:

Network controller

Video controller

Windows device mgr also says audio controller and PCI simple comms controller are missing.

After reading other posts in this forum, I have tried just about everything on the driver downloads page but nothing has worked. I have tried the following:

Network:

3Com 10/100 & V.90 LAN Mini-PCI
3Com 3C905B Integrated Network Card
3Com 3C905C Integrated Network Card

Actiontec V.90/NIC MPCI Combo

Video:

Most display devices from Dell 1503FP to Dell P992

ATI Mobility 3 / Mobility 4

Windows is just refusing to recognise any of these drivers. The only driver i have been able to install is a USRobotics wireless LAN PCMCIA card adapter which i downloaded from www.usr.com.

Could you please let me know where to get the correct drivers from or what i am doing wrong.

The first driver you need is for the chipset - without it, even the correct drivers for the other hardware will not work properly.

Unless they've changed something recently, chipset drivers aren't required under Win2k or WinXP on a C600. They certainly haven't been required on mine.

What kind of network device do you have installed? My C600 uses a PCMCIA network card. Do you have an integrated network device, or a card type NIC? Youy should probably post your Service Tag, so we can look and see what the original system configuration was, and whether it was equipped with integrated devices or not. You need to know what's installed on the PC in order to get the proper drivers. Guessing won't work. You can also contact Dell Support by phone, and they can help you determine what's on there, and help you get the proper drivers installed.

Regarding "Video: Most display devices from Dell 1503FP to Dell P992" - Don't even worry about that. Unless you have an external monitor attached, that doesn't figure into things, and even if you did, you probably wouldn't need monitor drivers.

Regarding the "PCI simple comms controller," that's probably a modem, but again, you have to know what's installed in order to get the right drivers. Either post the Service Tag here, or better still, call Support by phone, and they can get you headed in the right direction.

Hi,

For the modem and net drivers, open the door underneath and have a look to see what it is. It is a miniPCI card, and may be a different brand to what was fitted new. Sometimes parts are substituted that didn't come in the particular machine. It can make it hard to find the right driver.

Hi,   My service tag is 4ND070J. It is, as far as I know, a standard Latitude build (C600 or C500, not sure which as the case says both, but I was led to believe C600). I don't think any of the hardware has been upgraded (except for the addition of a wireless LAN PCMCIA card), so the network controller is the built-in internal one. Do I need a chipset driver then? If so which one? I don't know why the chipset drivers are not visible on the driver downloads page. How can I get information on the hardware in my laptop from Windows? It seems without a driver I can't find out about the hardware, and without knowing what hardware I've got, I can't get the right driver.... catch 22.   Many thanks, Alex

Hi,

The drivers are the same for a C500 or C600. The difference was the C600 had a Pentium 3, the C500 a Celeron. The Bios will tell you the Model and CPU type. Also when you boot, the splash screen will tell you the model. Do you have the resource CD ? It will show you the correct drivers to load.

You have a C600. You do not need to install chipset drivers, nor are any available for download under XP or Win2k. Since your system originally came from Europe rather than the U.S., the original system configuration tool at Dell's online support page doesn't offer any information about what was shipped with it.

If you can install and run the Belarc Advisor (a free download, link below), you may be able to find enough information to determine which drivers you need for your network device, modem (if present) and any other questionable items, but I'm reasonably certain you have enough information to get the audio and display adapter drivers taken care of. I'm not sure how things work in Europe, but you may have the same option of calling global support for your area and getting some assistance determining what's installed.

Hi,

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I downloaded the drivers and tried installing them again, and had more success. The ATI display driver installed fine (I must have done something wrong before), whereas the network driver i updated by Windows Update as I still didnt know which one i needed, and that's fine.

It's good to know I'm not alone.. this forum is invaluable thanks to the kindness of you people.
