No Audio in Latitude D600:

My brother bought a laptop, from a 3rd party (Used ) and it does not have an audio device installed , I checked in system info. and it said there was no audio device listed. is that right?
His laptop is a latitude D600, I could not find any specs for laptop at dell , did they make some latitudes without integrated sound?
He does have one driver not installed for the Multimedia Audio Controller. does this make a difference?

The error message usually means that the driver isn't installed (but one of the reasons for it not installing could be a defective chip), but the laptops do all have audio. The D600 is based on a Sigmatel STAC975x chip and needs the driver. A lot of times the correct procedure hasn't been followed after an OS re-installation and that will give the error message.

After you have performed an OS reinstallation, you have to install Dell Notebook System Software (find it under System & Configuration Utilities), then Intel Mobile Chipset (find under Chipset), then the audio and other drivers. Find all of these on your downloads page.

XP downloads for D600

Try installing the DNSS and the chipset, then re-install the driver and see if it will install.

Tip from rpilT2005: If still having problems installing the driver, check in the Device Manager for a "PCI Device" with a yellow question mark next to it, under the "System Devices" grouping. Hit 'update driver' on that one, and it should find a driver.

If no luck then you should download the Diagnostic utility and run that to see if the audio hardware is still functioning.

jimco thankyou for answering my post. I got your message a little while ago,(just checked my email) anyways I had my brother download the Sigmatel driver and install it and IT WORKED. Yea baby, thankyou very much.
I was wondering tho I had him download the Dell Notebook System Software but we have not installed I was wondering if it was alright to install it after everything is installed, the latitude's OS ,XP, was already installed when he bought it.
    Thanks

Since the audio is now working then probably the chipset is installed. That was the main thing necessary.

You can go ahead and install NSS but it probably isn't necessary.

Thanks again Jim, When I read the info on the download page about the Dell Notebook System Software, I thought that it would help in keeping drivers and settings up to date or current, if all its for is helping in loading drivers during an install then I won't have my brother install it . He is does not seem to understand that he needs to do some maintenance on his computer (uninstall temp files, windows update, defrag, etc...) as i have to remind him constantly, in one ear and out the other,
      Thanks Jim

Hello. Please see the "No Audio" FAQ for steps on how to diagnose that kind of problem. If you need further help, please post back with the name of your operating system and list which parts of the FAQ you need help with.
