No equivalent replacement for XPS 17 L702 in the current dell line up
I've got a 4 year old XPS17 L702, with an Intel Core i7-2720QM that scores 6215 on Passmark. I've swapped the c drive for a 512GB SSD which had speeded it up significantly. With Windows 10 available I thought it would be a great time to replace this, so my first port of call was to see what the current equivalent from Dell costs and how much it has improved.
But there is no longer an XPS17!
Inspiration gives an comparatively underpowered i7-5500U and no options.
Alienware is so brash with so much of it educated to having that it is unsuitable.
Ah well.

Thanks but I'm in the UK.
We have a few specialist businesses that will make up laptops. In the past I have been very pleased with "PC Specialist" who built me a great desktop. I've just had a look and I can get a17 inch laptop with up to an Intel Core i7-4910 Which has a Passmark of a much improved 9649.

The technology has evolved to slim and compact systems you will find more ultra-books in the market.
Currently you will find 17 inch laptops in Inspiron series.

I"m in the same boat, except I have the XPS 15 with your same specs. I've been looking for over a year and see that Dell has abandoned the high performance desktop replacement niche utterly and remorselessly. They've drank the tablet/ultra Kool-Aid. None of the mega PC retailers would dare consider putting a separate graphics card in a non-$3000 gaming laptop these days; it might decrease battery life or maybe (gasp!) add a centimeter to the width! You'll end up having to go to one of those smaller custom outfits, but whatever you do keep your XPS 17 as a collector's item. It was the pinnacle of a great era in laptops that is now over; resale values online show that.

There's only one manufacturer left making true desktop replacement 15 and 17" systems - that's Clevo. They're sold through Sager in the US, then mostly through niche resellers like XoticPC and Falcon Northwest. Just about everyone else's "desktop replacement" and "gaming" systems have gone the route of soldered-in CPUs and video chips.
It's a small market for sure -- one the majors don't seem to mind ceding to Clevo. I've been in the looking stage for a system like that for a while -- there's just nothing else out there, particularly with the level of engineering and at the price point Clevo produces.

Thanks for replying. Sorry if I misled you but I know that. I now see that my original post had a spell checker failure and put Inspiration instead of what I typed being Inspiron.
I know that 17 inch is in the Inspiron range, it is just that the processor gets a vastly lower Passmark score than my 4 year old XPS.
XPS17 L702, with an Intel Core i7-2720QM that scores 6215 on Passmark.
Inspiron 17 7000 has Intel Core i7-5500U that scores a measly 3938. It would be a retrograde step. There is no higher powered Inspiron that I can see.
When I last bought, I had a choice of processor, graphics, memory, disc and much more. That has all gone on the current site.
Clearly I am out of luck and out of step with your move to smaller lesser powered portable machines. I'd just been hoping that I missed something on your site.
