Pentium M vs. Pentium III - M

Question

What would the difference be if I switched from a 1 ghz laptop with a Pentium III M to a 2 ghz laptop with a Pentium M ?

Pentium M's are supposed to be much more energy eficient and therefore cooler.

Would the higher speed cancer it out, or would I get a cooler, quieter laptop?

Cooler than what? A PIII-M? No. Pentium M are similar to PIII-M.
They're cooler than the P4-Ms they replaced.

Yes, the Pentium M series runs much cooler than their PIII and PIV predecessors.  When I had a Lat C640, I went through a couple of Hard Drives in 2 years. I've had a D600 for over a year and a half now, and still have the same drive.  Heat is one of the biggest hard drive killers, and I've seen other folks with C640s blast through drives (more so the power users)..

I really don't think Centrino Pentium M is any cooler than Pentium III - M. It's hard to find data to compare apples-to-apples here. Intel isn't very consistent. But a quick search in google gives:

The hottest PIII-M listed here is 22W TDP. Another site said 24W.

The hottest Centrino Pentium M are 27W TDP while all are at least 21W TDP. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_M

Pentium 4-M ran about 35W TDP.

Your C640 was I think P4-M which was not based on PIII-M design. Centrino Pentium M has a lot in common with PIII-M design.

Many people with D600 were complaining about the heat from the palmrest area where the HD sits. I have C610 with PIII-M and D610 with Centrino Pentium M. A friend has D600 with Centrino Pentium M. The D600 is definately the hotter one. The heat depends on other things besides the output of the CPU.

Well what about the silly 1150/5150/5160 where the vent is on the bottom so that its like a hair dryer blowing hot air into your lap. The C610 is also like this with the vent directly on the bottom.

Put it on the carpet and watch your laptop melt down and sometimes catch on fire.

The Pentium M is a mix of technologies, the base core is built around the higher performance per clock Pentium III Tualatin but with SSE2 instructions added to make it compatible with the Pentium 4 instruction set. The interface to the motherboard is based on Netburst which is the type that the Pentium 4 uses.

So you get the higher performance per MHz of a Pentium III, SSE2 instructions, but the higher bandwidth of Netburst.

That's why if you'll read back in these forums around the time the Pentium 4 came out, you'll hear stories of people complaining that their P4 systems being out performed by Pentium III systems.
