Precision Mobile Workstation M70 upgrade questions

Hi,
I would like to avoid error-messages, that's why I would like to have a few questions answered before I upgrade the notebook. Should I be addressing this to the wrong forum, i would ask the moderators to forward it to the right place or by telling me where to post it to, thank you.

These questions affect a Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M70:

1. What is the maximum size of a IDE harddisk usable in a M70 ? Is it possible to use a 160GB harddrive with its full capacity in a M70 ?
2. Is it possible to upgrade the total RAM of 4 GB, by using the right 2GB modules,
by being limited to 3-3,5 GB in a 32-bit Windows ?

Some other question not regarding especially with the M70, but other Dell Computers as well:

How to setup the 'Dell Utility Partition' if built in a new hard drive ?

regards

Hi,

First of all, the M70 is more of a "professional" notebook - not many individuals own them.  Since companies tend to have their own IT groups that handle questions like this, that's probably why there aren't any responses.  The last place I worked, I had an M70 and needed a hard disk upgrade.  The IT group searched and searched and ended up telling me that the largest hard disk that they could order for this laptop was 100 gig.  I don't know if that is accurate or not.  Software wise I don't believe there's much of an issue, but I know with some of the older laptops I used to have, the hard disk space was limited and some of the larger drives were just a bit too large to fit in the space (I"m talking something like 7.5 mm vs 12.5 mm thick).

As far as the recover partition goes, once you get a new disk, set it up as an external disk and use a utility to copy the entire hard disk to the new one.

meanwhile i upgraded to a second hard drive via d-bay module, it was even possible to utilize a newer sata drive than using an ide drive in that module!

but i'm still fighting with the boot drive, as it has "only" 60 gb, but it's quite fast (7200rpm), and therefore kept for that long time.

Now i found a 2.5" ide hard drive with 320gb from western digital, if anyone could tell me if this drive is good with the m70 as a boot drive and not leaving any space of that drive behind ? Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB (WD3200BEVE)

I know this has been a while since that post; and the M70 is pressing its usefulness ( Its been a good one for me)....

Did anyone get the 320GB working ( or any 100+ GB ide or sata) to work as the main c: drive or in the D-bay slot?

Well, these machines are still alive and kicking.  I just bought one yesterday.

It has 2GB RAM and 80GB HDD.  I too was wondering which hard drives people have had success with upgrading them to.

If I do not see any comments in a week or two, I will simply try out some models and report back to this thread so it can be of help to future and current owners.

I was able to replace my older 80g hd with the 320 WD hd (x3)...

[[Western Digital WD3200BEVE Scorpio Blue 320GB Internal hard drive ATA-100 2.5" 5400 RPM.]]

One in the system; and one in a

drive bay; and another I the dock bay for good luck...

Swappable.

Not sure where the prices are these days, but

at the time they were close-outs, and very reasonable,

Well worthwhile to keep 'er goin'.

.... But ^$Considering these days.... Pennies per g with the tetra byter.

I'd love to have a SSD hard drive to reduce boot up,

But I think I read that even of I could find one, the bottle neck was in the r/w bus.

M70, It's been a good one for me!

I still do some pretty good cad/cnc work with it.

A shame that xp support has ceased.

Best of luck with yours.

Still using mine as well for CAD on XP, would love to upgrade W7 but can't find any drivers for the hardware - any ideas?
