Problem reaching maximum resolution for external monitor
I recently purchased a 22" LCD monitor which has a native resolution of 1920x1080. I'm connecting it to the VGA port on my Inspiron 6400 which has a ATI Radeon x1400 256mb video card. In the display section of the control panel under settings, it appears that it's set to 'multiple monitors' which I think is limiting the max resolution for the external monitor even though I have the laptop screen disabled via function+F8. The max resolution for the laptop screen goes past 1920, but the max resolution for the monitor is only 1600x1200. I've tried updating the video card driver, I've scoured the internet and nothing seems to be working. I am fairly certain my video card supports this resolution, so I think it's just finding the right setting or applying the right update. Any suggestions?

The video circuity sets the resolution for an external equal to or lower than the resolution set for the internal display. It will pick a resolution to maintain the correct aspect ratio; round objects should be round. Where is the 1600x1200 resolution from?
Your internal screen is either 1280/800 or 1680x1050. It is not >1920x????. This may be the maximum resolution of the x1400 video card. A resolution of 1920 is seen usually only with 17" screens.
Most likely, you have the 1280x800 screen, so the resolution selected for the external LCD would be close to 1422x1080. If you look in the video control panel, you will be able to see which of the "standard resolutions" would be closest to this.
You are not really turning off the video to the internal screen with Fn/F8, only turning off the screen itself.

The external monitor is maxed at 1600x1200. The internal monitor is set to 1280x800, but the slider will go up to 2048x1536, although it resets back to 1280x800 upon hitting 'apply'.
Is there any way I can confirm what the maximum resolution for this video card is?
