Quickset for Windows 7 64-bit on XPS M170

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, but these  forums are slightly confusing.

I bought a used Dell XPS M1710 recently and instantly upgraded in to Windows 7 64-bit (Who needs Vista) and by the looks of things, everything essential is working.

I am however, unable to find the software called Quickset for my machine on this operating system. I've found a 32-bit version of Quickset that apparently worked on this machine (although it was made for another) but that won't install since it requires me to use the 64-bit version.

Could anyone provide a link to a version of Quickset that will work with this configuration?

The Vista 64 bit Dell Quickset Driver should work in Windows 7 64 without a problem. You may get it here.

You should install all the Vista 64 bit drivers from here in the correct order (see my wiki A Clean Install of Windows 7). The exception is bluetooth which the Vista driver crashes in Windows Explorer instead use R231570 or R226750.

Hi dwatson251,

Dell XPS M1710 as not configured for Windows 7 operating system as you have upgraded the operating system. We need try installing multiple versions of ‘Dell quickset’ on your computer.

Please try the links provided below and check for issue resolution.

Also I would advise you to type in “quickset for Windows 7” in the search box in the link given below and try installing many versions available for quickset.

Thank you! I got Quickset working perfectly, and that link you gave me full of drivers will be helpful too.

I'm trying to install the Bluetooth driver now but it's telling me to activate Bluetooth by pressing either Fn+F11 or the radio ON/OFF switch... I thought this was Fn+F2, but that doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas?

It is a common problem which us why I gave you 2 files for bluetooth one for Latitudes and the other for Inspirons. Try the second file and ignore the first. First one seems to be if you have a dedicated Bluetooth switch, the second if fn and f2. If both don't work let me know.

Unfortunately, both installers ask to activate bluetooth using the wireless switch, which only seems to turn my Wifi on and off and not much else.

For Inspiron systems R226750 works and the system shares the Vista driver with these, therefore it should work.

Check the setting in the BIOs setup for the Fn and F2 switch. Check that the wireless switch will switch off the bluetooth.

I went in to the BIOS and there are settings to change what the wireless button does; Turn on/off Bluetooth and Wifi, bluetooth, or just wifi.

By default the setting is on Bluetooth + Wifi, but the message still pops up telling me to turn bluetooth on no matter how many times I press it.

Try following the instructions in Dell XPS M1530 - Bluetooth 355 and Windows 7.

  • You need to force Windows 7 to detect the bluetooth module, so download the Dell patch: R159805
  • At this time, the bluetooth module should be detected and installed by Windows 7
  • Go to Dell support and download the latest driver for the bluetooth module (for Dell XPS 1530) R140135
  • Install the driver. It will update the module's firmware

I would try running the patch R159805 and then running R226750. If R226750 still doesn't work restart the computer then try running it again.

If it still doesn't work try the R140135 this is the Vista driver, it probably will install but it may not be completely stable. My guess is it will crash Windows explorer.

The patch doesn't run, I tried navigating to the folder the drivers extracted in, and a command prompt window opens (and closes quickly) which reads: "No capable devices found."

It's like the Bluetooth adapter doesn't even exist, and I don't think it appears in my device manager. Could it be likely that the seller I got it from removed the Bluetooth adapter?

The bluetooth module is usually added via customisation. You can quickly check if you have one, go to page 7 here. Remove the AC and battery and then the screw which holds the module in place. You will physically see if you have the part. If you don't have the part check to see if the cable for it is there (it should be).

If you don't have the module and want one, you can buy it pretty cheap from eBay e.g. here.

To DWATSON251:

I am having the same problem with Quickset and the error "Not a supported System". You seem to have resolved your issue. Can you get me the file or the link that you used? What really gets me is I just installed a new HDD and reloaded Windows 7. I had the same setup before with quickset installed. Now I cannot seem to get things working.

Thank You in advance
