kishore,

Are you re-installing the operating system? After you have performed an Operating System re-installation, install the audio driver following this order of installation:

a. Install Dell Notebook System Software (click the + sign next to System Utilities). Restart.

[But for some reason Dell does not provide the XP NSS for the 1420 so you have to skip this step.]

b. Next  install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver (click the + sign next to Chipset). Restart.

c. Finally install the Sigmatel audio driver  R171789 (click the + sign next to Audio).

Kishore, I would try reinstalling the Intel Mobile chipset driver and then the audio driver.

If no luck, try reinstalling the Sigmatel driver in safe mode.

Was there any problem with the audio before you re-formatted the hard drive?

Hi Jimco,

I tried with c:\Dell\drivers\ R171789 \WDM\suhlp.exe, this also not working..

kishore,

Okay, here is my final suggestion.

1. Go to c:\Dell\drivers\R171789 and delete the R171789 folder.
2. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221 and get the UAA driver. Install it and restart the computer.
3. Download R171789 again.
4. After it finishes extracting the files and begins to install, cancel.
5. Open Device Manager and expand System devices near the bottom. If you see a PCI Device entry with a ? next to it. Go to the properties and choose to update the driver. Choose to manually find the drivers and don't let windows look for drivers on the net or automatically. Browse to
c:\Dell\drivers\R153908\WDM

With any luck it should detect some new hardware and one of them should be the Sigmatel.

Hi jimco,

   Thanks a lot..

I tried with link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221 there is no UAA drivers for XP.So i googled, got  link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 this contains UAA drivers for windows XP.

And more link http://america.giga-byte.com/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_audio_realtek_azalia.exe.

That's great. The next time this comes up I'll know what to say.

Thanks for the corrected address for the UAA. I have added it to my notes.
