Studio 1558: Bottom half of screen flickering lines problem
I have a Dell Studio 1558 and the bottom half of the screen has flickering white lines across it. There is also a red vertical line on the right half of the screen. This problem occurs as soon as the laptop is powered on. I was wondering what the problem could be as I don't want to buy the wrong piece of hardware.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi winslowand,
I recommend running LCD BIST(built in Self test) on the computer (power off the computer, restart the computer by holding the “D” and power button).
Check if the screen flickers and vertical lines appear during diagnostics.
Also, check the status of LCD display in while booting into safe mode (restart the computer and tap F8 on Dell logo and select Safemode). Check the status of display in safe mode.
Awaiting your response!

Rajesh,
I did both of what you recommended and unfortunately I am still having the same problem. When I turned on my laptop this morning the flickering white lines seem to have spread to the top of the screen as well.
If you have any more recommendations I would gladly try them. Thanks.

Attach an external monitor. If the lines show there, it's likely the video chip has failed. Replace the mainboard.
If the lines do not show on an external monitor, reseat both ends of the cable that runs between the mainboard and display panel. Check the cable for damage; if it's damaged, replace it.. If the cable is OK, then replace the screen.
