T9400 in a D630c
Hi, I have a D630c with A19 BIOS and would like to know if I put a T9400 (which is a 2.53Ghz, 1066mHz, socket P) should it work with my motherboard and will it work my existing memory which is a 2GB PC2-6400S 800mHz module.
I know that the memory works fine with a T7250 cpu installed but when the T9400 is in it won't boot.
Also, because I have choosen the wrong socket P processor for an upgrade may I know which socket P cpu's are compatible with a D630? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors

The D630 line topped out at the last of the 800 MHz Penryn CPUs - it doesn't support 1066 MHz FSB (Montevina) CPUs -- these were not supported by any D-series. The first of the E-series were the first to support the 1066 MHz bus.

So, any socket P 800Mhz? Is the Mhz the bus speed?
Is a T7700 (2.4Ghz, L2=4096) better than a T8300(2.4Ghz, L2=3072)?

Outside of a benchmarking utility, I don't think you could tell the difference in everyday operation. Go with whichever is cheaper (but don't expect a quantum leap in performance).
The single best price/performance boost for your system would be a solid state drive - not a CPU upgrade.

You should gain improved overall performance by bumping the RAM up to 4GB. You will gain hard disk performance if you go to a 7200 rpm drive instead of the 5400 rpm that you probably. I wouldn't put the money into an SSD for that old a machine.
ejn63 is correct in that you never see a big performance boost by slightly increasing processor. You only see improvements when running benchmark testing, but in the real world, you get little if any noticeable improvement.

A year ago I'd have agreed -- but with very good 128G SSDs now available for $50 and 256s for under $100, SSDs don't carry the price penalty they once did.

Agree with you for users that don't download many apps or store many movies and pictures. So many programs and games are written so poorly today because large hard drives don't require tight coding, that they have become very bloated. I guess I'm still living in the 60s and 70s, where we needed to use tight coding because of storage and RAM limitations. I wrote database managers in Pascal or C that would easily run in 8-16K of RAM on 8 bit PCs. That sounds kind of ancient!!!!!
