The correlation between LCD screen and CPU for the Inspiron 9400

Hello everyone,

I recently became interested in the Inspiron 9400 (n07945), thinking it the perfect solution for a user like me who enjoys multi-tasking and good bit of gaming on the side (I'm particularly enthusiastic about the combination of a 17" screen with the new 7900 GS!). However, a little snag came up when I started playing around with the system configurator on the website that made me wonder about the following: exactly what is the correlation between cpu and lcd screen?

You see, when I select any cpu superior to the T2300E that the configurator defaults to, I receive an error on screen which states that there is a compatibility issue between the processor and the lcd screen. Apparently, the T2400 and up cannot function in tandem with the default 17" Wide Screen WXGA+(1440x900), but require the 17" UltraSharp Wide Screen WUXGA (1920x1200) Display which costs a hefty (at least, to me!) 178,50 euros more. Can anyone tell me whether there is a non-marketing related explanation for this? :smileywink:

(As a potential customer, it struck me as a bit odd that aforementioned error pops up right away when accessing the pages for the higher-end models in the 9400 series (N07946 etc.) as it essentially means that the default, minimum configurations are "incompatible", non-functional products..)

In addition, does this pose any problems for future upgrades? For instance, when I would want to upgrade the cpu, would I then be forced to have the more expensive display installed along with it?

If anyone could shed some light upon these issues I would be quite grateful.

that's rather unusual.  i've tried browsing using the T2400 and default WXGA+ screen, it works okay on my end...

:robotsurprised:

Thanks for the reply. It seems it was just some glitch or other that crept up, as I tried selecting other CPUs just now which did not result in the error message popping up.

I have the 17" WXGA+ and T2400 and 7900GS on my E1705 and they work well together.  But in hindsight, I wish I had sprung for the WUXGA screen since its viewing angles and contrast are way better.

Thanks for the reply tonebalone, I'll keep that in mind when putting together my preferred system.
