USB 3.0 driver won't install on Inspiron 5720 Windows 7 64 bit
My new laptop keeps advising me I need a critical device driver (5HG1D) called the Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller Device. At the end of the download I am advised that it may not have installed correctly (but how do I know either way?) and I get a choice as to how to continue. I can restart and see if it worked, so I try that - and it doesn't. So next time I take the other choice, to try some kind of compatiblity installation instead. That doesn't work. When I try to unzip the file from my download folder, the error message says, "This Operating System is not supported."
No matter what I do, I have the alert that I need a critical driver. Please help!

Hi Leslie,
The driver which you updated from the Intel website is the most updated driver available. If it installed without any error then you may ignore/archive the alert.

Thanks for your help. I tried the link in your note. After the file unzipped, an error message popped up saying This Operating System is not supported. Any other ideas?

Hi dedudette,
The drivers which is posted is compatible with Windows 7 64 and 32 bit.
Did this issue start after reinstalling the Windows?Did you upgrade the Windows on your system?
Which is the current Operating System installed on your system?
Try uninstalling USB root Hub.Go to Device Manager expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click on USB root hub, click Uninstall (do this for all the USB root hub listed)
Reboot the system and then try installing the above driver.
Thank You

This is a brand new laptop which I've had for 2 weeks. There was an alert from day one to update this driver and it has never worked. The laptop has Win 7 64 bit.
These are the root hubs shown in Device Manager. Should I uninstall them all?
(2) USB Root Hub
(1) Intel(R) USB 3.0 Root Hub
(1) Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller

Hi dedudette,
Uninstall both (1) Intel(R) USB 3.0 Root Hub,(1) Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.
Reboot the system and then try reinstalling the driver.

Hello again. I uninstalled both items, rebooted, downloaded the driver from the link you shared earlier, successfully unzipped the files, did another reboot, and got the window which says This program might not have installed correctly. Again, I don't know if it did or did not. Any more ideas? Thanks, Leslie

Hi Leslie,
If the USB 3.0 port is still not working then you may need to reinstall Windows after backing up all your data.
For steps and ways to reinstall Windows refer to this link : support.dell.com/.../document
Note:Since its a new system you may try to restore the system to factory settings using the Factory Image on the recovery partition.

Hello again. This issue was present when I first began using this laptop three weeks ago. How would reinstalling Windows back to that state change the problem? Before I go to great lengths to make changes, I need to know that I am not just trying this as a last resort. I have done a great deal of customization on this machine, and am not anxious to spend the next three weeks doing it all over again. Thanks again for your help.

Hi dedudette,
If you want to avoid reinstalling Windows lets try installing this updated driver(version 1.0.6.245) directly from the Intel website.
Use this link for download : downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx
Note:Before installing this driver uninstall both Intel(R) USB 3.0 Root Hub, Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller from Device Manager and reboot the system.
Let me know how it goes.
Thank You

I think I know what part of the problem is. When I uninstall the 3.0 root hub and extensible host controller and reboot, as soon as the system boots up again, they are reinstalled. When I go back into Control Panel and look at device manager, there they are. So, given what I just realized, I did not try the download you recommended.
Should I try it even though these two items are not actually uninstalled?
Thanks again, I do appreciate your help!

Hi dedudette,
If the USB 3.0 port is still not working after uninstalling and rebooting the system, then go ahead and install the driver from the link on my previous reply.

I did the install from the Intel link. Did not get an error message when I rebooted. I don't have a 3.0 usb device but have used all of the usb ports and they seem to work with my 2.0 cords. I still have the alert on my desktop, saying I need to install the driver update - and I can archive that, but should I have to? Should it go away if everything is working and up to date?
Thank you again! Leslie
